You may try Hotel Paragon if you are on shoe string budget or if your pocket permits more there are several hotels ranging from Rs.300 to 1500 on Sudder Street. This is central Kolkata, and very convenient for everything.

Rath Yatra Festival of Sabarna RoyChoudhury

by goutammitra

In the year 1719 Raja Rai Krishna Dev Majumdar Choudhary, introduced Ratha Yatra Festival (Chariot Festival) at Barisha, Kolkata, against the Divide & Rule policy of the British and for enjoyment of his subjects.
Till the year 1910 Salagram Shila (Stone form of Lord Vishnu) used to be carried on the Chariot. In the very next year9 1911), Lalkumar Roychoudhary built a Jagannath Temple at Barisha, Sakher Bazar and also built the idols of Lord jagannath, Balaram & sister Subhadra. From that very year these idols were carried to the Chariot and used for the Ratha Yatra. In the early days a 9 day long fair used to be organized with lots of entertainment such as Dance, Drama, various shows but today the celebration is limited to only for two days due to shortage of space. Even today the fair is organized on the day of Ratha Yatra & on the day of Ulta Rath (the day of Return of lord), when the Lord is supposed to come back from his aunt’s house.

The Volvo Buses for comfortable travel.

by goutammitra

Now the city of Kolkata has large comfortable Volvo Buses for overnight travel to Puri, Bhubaneshwar, Siliguri, Durgapur, Asansole etc. Started by West Bengal Surface Transport corporation, these buses are made with European Standard. With the new four lane project our roads have become wider and smoother so travel in these buses is real pleasure. They are fast, reliable, clean and always on time.

For Siliguri it leaves at 19.00 hrs reaches at 06.00 hrs- Fare Rs.750.( USD$14/15).
For Puri it leaves at 20.00 hrs. reaches at 07.00 hrs - Fare Rs.750 ( USD$14/15).
For Durgapur it leaves at 12Noon reaches at 15.00 hrs. - Fare Rs.265( USD6/7)

These timings are tentative and may change from time to time so is the fare. The buses leaves from Bus Terminus at Baboo Ghat or opp Eden Gardens. They have several Travel Ticket counters at various places also some travel agents sell their tickets. I shall get more info and then post.

Deja vu all over again

by jrober37 about Kwality

This chain has been around forever and they finally spelled Chicken Maryland correctly. This family restaurant is really a trip down memory lane - be prepared to laugh. The Chicken Kiev - hilarious. The ice cream is very very good.

Indian Dhaba Food.

by goutammitra about A-1 Dhaba.

On 1st of January we decided to have Indian Dhaba( Restaurant) food at one of the very good Dhabas of Kolkata. Dhabas are Indian word for Rustic Eateries situated in a Petrol Pump. This A1 Dhaba is situated in one of the private run Petrol Pump on Calcutta Bombay Express highway. The Pump is owned by Relience Industries, but these Restaurants run by their Franchaisees. Food is authentic and prepared in the correct Indian style. Food is served in Stainless Steel plates, glasses. Just the appropriate Rustic Indian atmosphere!!! Today we had Mutton Biryani, Mutton roganjosh, Chicken Tikka Kebab, Butter Naan. All excellently made with care!!

Price is bit expensive for the kind of pain we took. Its 50 KMs drive from Kolkata! But food was tasty.
