Calcutta gets at your heart!
by nepalgoods
At every corner there are little statues and altars, where the people worship. This is the goddess Kali, the dark and frightening goddess, which is very popular in Calcutta. If you behave well and bring her offerings, than you will have a good live!
I was very impressed by the spiritualuty of the people but also by the negligence toward their animals. Even the Holy Cows are neglected and have to eat paper and plastic, standing in the middle of the traffic.
The Mysterious Sunderbans
by lynnehamman
A really fascinating place to visit while in Kolkata (if you have the time) is the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve. It is the largest Mangrove Eco-System in the world.
There are various camps to stay at, and we liked the Sunderbans Tiger Camp. There are also various types of accommodation, including cottages, bungalows or tents.
It can be a challenge to get to the Sunderbans- bus for a few hours, then a boat trip of 2 hours. But it is so very worth going. One sees another side of rural life here- simple, village folk, who survive by growing their own vegs, and mostly by fishing.
The scenery is breathtaking. Boats will take you through the creeks, close to the Mangrove Forests. If you are EXTREMELY lucky, you may spot a Bengal tiger. Their numbers are declining, sadly. The bird-life is prolific. Best times to be in the water is early morning or sunset. An air of mystery surrounds the area, and legends abound here.

A Boat trip to Dakshineshwar temple.
by goutammitra
Those who are willing to make a trip to both Belur Math and Dakshineshwar Temple in a short period, there ais a better option take the river ferry. The journey across the river takes about 20-30 mts and the fare is Rs7/- per person.
They take about 25 persons in each ferry. These are all country boats, fitted with motors for faster transport.
Those who are fancy free may try this option as many people take it everyday.
Dont' worry this is safe.
PLEASE DON'T MISS CHINESE FOOD IN CALCUTTA
by Kumarjit about Flavours of China(Bar-B-Q Reastaurant)
Calcutta has long been famous for its diverse range of cuisine, ranging from Japanese to Thai to Italian. One of the best places to try Chinese food is the Flavours of China, located at Park Street. You can get anything starting from Cantonese to Hunan dishes. Do try out their marinated lobster and other seafoods. You will ask for more! My favourite dish here is Hunan Chicken. The sauce is mouth-watering.
The Great Veggie's Treat!
by goutammitra about Haldiram's at Ballygunge place!
Now in Kolkata there are many speciality vegetarian restaurants like Delhi and Bombay. They serve North Indian and especially Rajasthani food. The food is selected by the customer himself and is totally self served. The atmosphere is very clean, odour less and perfect place to get treated.
The owner of this place is Mr.Prabhudayal Agarwal is a Marwari Businessman ( From Rajasthan) settledin Kolkata for centuries. He started his career as a ready made Marwari snack maker about 20/25 years back and then graduated in Restaurant business, now he has many restaurants like this in Kolkata and many more in all over India.
In Kolkata there is a sizeable population of Marwaris and Gujratis who are predominantly Vegetarian. They along with Bengalis( Who are Non Vegetarians) are patronising these vegetarian restaurants. Till a few years ago eating out was not in Marwari culture though they are economically very sound but now things are changing.
Now this place has a restaurant, a grocery shopping mall and a snack & chocolate shop as well. A real nice place to visit on weekend for dining and shopping as well. We had varieties of dishes, like Raj Kachori, Veg Pizza, Dal Makhni, Naan, Malai Kofta, Allu Chaat,Gol gappa ( Phuchka). All are excelent and one has to appreciate the fact that this place caters more than thousand customers a day. Only fixed menu is available, so all the dishes are cooked in large scale. Maintaining the taste and flavour is a great task and the cooks there make it possible!
This place is highly recommended for those who dont like vegetarian food but I am sure that they will have a second thought after they visit the place!
