Hotels: Sudder Street

I was expecting Sudder Street to be full of beggars, rubbish and other unsavoury types but it wasn't that bad. I only encountered a couple of beggars - women carrying babies and a couple of cripples. There was a pile of rubbish at the bottom end of the street near the Indian Museum but this was cleared up during my stay plus someone also moved on some homeless people who had camped out on the street. Anyway, I spent about an hour or so going around about 6 or 7 of the budget hotels in the area as I was, at the time, staying near the Howrah Station.

Hotel Galaxy - This is located down a small street at 3 Stuart Lane so is fairly quiet. They were re-decorating when I visited and the only room they had available was a very large room with 2 double beds which was a bit excessive for just one. It had a hotwater shower and was Rs400. This was the best option but when I went back to move in, it wasn't available.
Paragon Hotel - This had horrible rooms with stained sheets even though they were cheap. There were some Japanese staying in one room and I wondered why they had bothered staying there! Don't bother yourself!
Shilton Hotel & Hotel Maria - much the same as most others. Small poor looking rooms with stains everywhere even though they were around Rs200/250. Take it from me, it's probably better to spend an extra Rs100 and get somewhere half decent.

HOTEL PARAGON.: BACKPACKER'S NEST.

Well not many travellers know that the Mega city of Kolkata has accute shortage of Hotels in the budget and mid range. The city has grown by leaps and bounds but civic amenities, roads, transport , traffic , the footpaths all needs re-looked into. Calcutta lacks these infrastructures and we have miles to go. However, the Sudder Street area is in Central Heart of Kolkata and inthis area there a number of hotels and guest houses though not at par with international standard but very popular with Backpack travelers from world over(Anyway options are not much for a budget traveller).

Our VT friend Junilo S. Espiritu ( Jon) stayed in this place when he came to Kolkata last August 2006. The place has dormitoty 5 beds in a room and single& Double room. Toilet & bathrooms are shared. But the price is very very cheap. on paid Rs.75/- (USD$2) per day for dormitory accomodation and I asked the hotel fellow the single rooms will cost Rs300/- (USD$7 Double Rs500-600/- ( USD$10-14) perday. This is real bargain for a traveller from Western Country as the dollar stretches too far in India. Please remember you cant' get very clean and comfortable accomodation with this kind of price tag. But Jon said the bed was clean and they change sheets in 3 days!

Hotel Emirates: Dont stay here!!!

(date stayed - July 19, 2006)

Room 104
Double Bed
Room rate - 400 rupees
with TV, bathroom, toilet

Note: rate per night should not be 400 Rupees but I have no choice coz it was raining very hard outside and flooded

I asked the rate of other Hotels and it ranges from R 150 to R 300.

I checked-in around 5:30 a.m. and the receptonist wants me to leave the Hotel same day coz the check-out time is 12 noon. He wants me to pay another R 400. Then he told me to pay at least R 200 and not to tell it to anyone!!

I disagreed so I decided to go but when I am about to go, he told me to stay and I can stay till the next day!!!

KOLKATA ACCOMODATION

Kolkata has many hotels but it still felt that there is a great shortage of budget hotels or the hotels meant for travellers, especially for backpack travellers from european and american countries. though recently some new hotels like golden park, peerless inn, have come up but their prices are not at all encouraging to the basic travellers.
some of the guest houses offer excellent bed and breakfast but that info is currently not ready with me.
For stay in star category hotel please connect to vt link and for budget accomodation trust your lonely planet guide. So far some of the hotels in sudder street area like , fairlawn hotel, lyton hotel, YWCA guest house, new kennilworth hotel offer fairly good accomodation.

Salvation Army: Dormitory

Here are the place where I stay for a couple of days before heading to the South of India.
I found it cool although, its not private. Still I could make a friends here.
And the place also being take care off and clean. Dormitory is cheap and this is girls dormitory while boy's dormitory is down stair, it is separated from each other.

Salvation Army Hostel

I actually made this photo to shock my parents, whom I wanted to write, that I finally ended staying in the Salvation Army Hostel in Calcutta. In Germany the Salvation Army helps mainly homeless people. In Calcutta this hostel is frequented mainly by backpackers. I did not stay there, as it was full.

Unique Quality: It is said to be very clean and cheap. But it is almost always full.

I just check -in at Hotel...

I just check -in at Hotel Maria at Sudder Street. It's quite ok. If you feel wanna have bath with hot water after 9pm you have to get and carry it by yourown with bucket. heheheh, cool eh, and I done it.
The price quite reasonable actually but I guess it is pretty much expensive for a cheap traveler like me. And I shifted out to another lodging at Salvation Army. emm,.. this cheap, clean and I stayed in dorm so I can make friend to another travelers from around the world.
