Travel Tips for Kolkata (Calcutta)

Oh! Calcutta! Food, Glorious Food!

by Kumarjit

The most important thing that I like about Calcutta, other than its warmth and bustling life, is the varieties of cuisines available in the city. In Calcutta, you can get any kind of cuisine from any corner of the world. Be it Italian, Mexican, Korean, Japanese, French or Austrian - its all there in Calcutta! And the Chinese as well as Thai cuisines in Calcutta are the best in India. The dishes that they prepare are so authentic - both in terms of taste and tradition - that it can leave anyone wondering about the cullinary skills of the chefs and the people here.
Please try out the cuisines in the following restaurants in Calcutta:
1. Mainland China (situated in Gurusaday Dutta Road)
2. Krystal Chopstick (situated in Hindustan Park, near Gariahat Road)
3. Marco Polo in China (situated in Park Street)
4. Jong's (Situated in Park Street)
5. Pizza Hut (situated in Camac Street)
6. Baan Thai (at the Oberoi Grand)
7. Sharma's (for sweets)
8. One Step Up(Park Street), for a wonderful cafe experience. If I am away from Calcutta, what I miss the most is definitely the food. No other place in India offers such wide varieties of cuisines from accross the world. It is truly a wonderful experience for anyone who has visited the city recently, as so many new eateries have come up now!

Watch the sunset over Ganges on a Boat!

by arikde

A must-see in Calcutta is to take a local boat around 4,30pm and see the sunset over the Ganges. These boats called "Noukas" can be rented from the many Ghats lining the river .... expect to pay as much as you can negotiate. An hour usually runs for around Rs. 150.

Taxi

by bladedragon

In most major places like airport and train station you can find pre-paid taxi counter.
If you're a foreigner, this is the best fare you can get.
Even if you're very good at bargaining, those private cab owners won't give in at least double the fare of those from pre-paid counter.
The cabs also goes by fare, but you must make sure they don't bring you around to clock in more.
Oh, and their driving style is very exciting!

Best quality - best price

by jrober37 about Tangerine

This is simply the best quality restaurant in Calcutta at any price - and this is a bargain. There are 3 branches - I suggest the central city one on Outram Sreet. Go for the lunch buffet as an introduction/sampler. Grilled Bhetki - succulent white fish from the Bay of Bengal - fresh, fresh, fresh. A delicate sauce of mustard, chili and parmesan. Excellent selection of Deserts.

KOLKATA'S BETTER DINING PLACES-2

by goutammitra about The Silver Oak.

The Silver Oak is one of the fine dining places of Kolkata. It has emerged recently in Kolkata and located in Lansdowne Road near Rash Behari Avenue and Southern Avenue. This area lacked good quality Restaurants for many years but now almost 7/8 good restaurants have emerged in the last 6/7 years in South Kolkata.
We visited this place on Sunday evening 19th August. We had a whole Beckti fried ( Marinated and to be had with Tarter sauce), Murg Peshawari Special Kabab ( Chicken Kabab prepared in Peshawari style) as starter and to accompany with we had Foster's Beer. Munu had a Soup. All this cost us about Rs. 1150/- plus tips surely value for money. The Beckti Fish and the Kebab was really excellent. The service is fast, polite and efficient.
As soon as you take a seat they give you a cool towel dipped in chilled Cologne water! Very refreshing and sets the mood right.
They also serve wine and all sorts of spirits and also offer Thai, Chinese with Indian dishes as well. A real good place to dine out. They also have a smokers section!
