Used to be the best

Unique Quality: This was a top notch hotel once upon a time, that is before ITC Sonar Bangla and the Hyatt opened up. I peformed in this hotel many years ago when I had my own dance troupe. The club is now mediocre, frequented by rich teenage kids.

Taj Bengal

Very centrally located, a stones throw from the new howrah bridge and a short walk from Victoria memorial, eden gardens etc.
The service is pretty decent, as you would expect from any Taj hotel. The design of the hotel/ rooms is a bit dated i thought... not quite contemporary and not a heritage property either (as the showpiece taj president is in Bombay...)
Overall, it was a good stay.

Unique Quality: The world cup being around, meant that there was a special German food and drinks experience thing on (`taste of germany') at the coffee shop and over breakfast etc.

One of the best luxury hotels in Calcutta

If you are very sure of your pocket and like to be in superior comfort and luxury whereever you go, then The Taj Bengal would be the best place for you. It is a five star luxury hotel catering to all the needs of its boarders. The rooms and suites are very clean and well decorated and the hotel has a special Chinese cuisine restaurant, an Italian restaurant, a bar, an Indian restaurant and a discotheque. It also has a swimming pool and a spa. If you can afford five star luxury, then the Taj Bengal would be your best choice.

Unique Quality: It is located in a good area. I like their Chinese food very much. The rooms are conspicuous and spacious. They give you complementary pick-up and transfer from and to the airport.

Great service and chipmunks for guests

by Marthamaire about Taj Bengal, Calcutta

Calcutta

The Taj Bengal is a lovely hotel but on the pricey side. It is ranked #2 in Calcutta. You will be greeted in your room by a basket of fruit and a small box of chocolates. The service is great. I borrowed some dvds to watch one night and the staff provided free popcorn and a coke. There are a number of chipmunks around the hotel and I always had a few of them on my windowsill in the morning. I saved bits of muffin for them, so by my third and final day there, I had quite a hungry crowd. 34b,Belvedere Road, Alipore, +91 33 22232574

The Awesome Experience At Taj Bengal

by TripAdvisor Member manuDelhi

Our vacation which was long overdue finally we concluded with TajBengal at Kolkatta. Although we had a ltd budget but we got a great deal due to DURGA PUJA festival. We got a deal for 2 nights 3 days.
The hospitality of the hotel was par excellence. They were most accommodating and made you feel comfortable right from the word go. We had reached much early than the check in time but as the room was available they ensured that we settle down. We were with our two sons 10 and 1 year old and the hotel staff always was there when we required them especially for my younger son.
The lounge as we entered was fabulous and the rooms well prepared, fully filled up with the goodies and although there was some construction/ renovation going on it never caused any concern to any of us, we came to know of this only the last day as there was no noise etc to make us notice anything.
The pool toddlers and the bigger one was a hit with my sons they enjoyed the same and the staff was there to keep an eye on them so that we could enjoy the shade.
The spa which was included in the itinery but only for both of us was again an experience which was awesome.
The buffet brekfast was sumptuous and what variety they had. The variety included south indian, north indian, variety of non veg dishes, cakes and the special omellettes with no of beverages to choose from. One dinner again in the itenary included whatever the taste buds of yours desire. On the whole the meals were tastefully sumptuous.
The package also included a cab for 4 hrs. The white dress chauffer driven corolla took us to all the places which we wanted to see and the chauffer was well versed with the city to inform us of the heritage and the culture along the route. The cab had drinking water and mints to cater for enroute requirements. Quite an impressive feature.
On the whole it was a wholesome vacation with the package of Rs 13000/- for the duration of 3days and 2 nights

The Empire's Gem

I use Taj hotel's every time I visit India on business. I travelled from New Delhi to the Taj Bengal and arrived late evening to be met by the duty manager who took me straight to the executive floor. He then introduced me to the business manager who escorted me to my room where a 'butler' was awaiting at my door and welcomed me, by name? The checking-in process in Taj hotels is painless, no lining up at reception, no luggage... everything is so carefully thought out with the greatest and most professional level of service. The Taj Bengal is no exception.

This large luxury hotel is close to all attractions including the marvellous Victoria Memorial building and gardens. If you want to get around anywhere, the hotel provides you a car and driver who can take you on appointments or if you have a couple of free hours, sightseeing. The hotel also has a health club, gym and good outdoor pool.

I cannot close this review without giving a special mention to the Chef & Waiters of what is one of Kolkata's and India's finest Asian restaurants...Chinoiserie. The food, service and overall appearance of the restaurant should get my 5 stars for that is one of the best eating places I have ever visited. A special mention to Leonard, my waiter must be given. All at Chinoiserie and the Taj Bengal should give themselves a ‘big pat’ on the back. The Taj group should be very proud of this establishment. If I ever visit the city again, I won't need to look anywhere else… Thank you Taj Bengal.

Loved it

I stayed at the Taj Bengal for 2 nights. Both Indian and Pakistan cricket teams were staying at the hotel, as they were playing a test match in Kolkata. Security was everywhere but it didn't interfere too much.
I had a Taj Club room, so check in was on the top floor. The room includes several perks including a bottle of wine, butler service etc. You can't fault the service at this hotel. The room itself was quite large, some people might find the furnitures a bit dated.
The breakfast buffet was good with a large selection, but the best of all was the Indin restaurant at the lobby level.
Overall a great stay at the Taj.

Cal - full on!

by TripAdvisor Member Fleabane

Taj Bengal offers a wonderful welcome from-car-to-room seamlessly. Club rooms and lounge are very good, breakfast excellent. There is a small problem with rather slow service – 15 minutes for a cup of green tea is not necessary, and top-ups do not occur automatically at happy hour (where snacks are very meagre). Staff uniforms are excellent by any international standard.

The bar is too small and made almost unbearable by the ‘live’ band and the soft-porn video channel (why?). The hotel must be aware of this. Staff are excellent though. The Indian has excellent food – freshly cooked for you. But can suffer from that irritating “will you please wait for us to find a table for you” when the place is half empty… So book ahead.

Hotel seems only to use clean, metered, A/C taxis – which is a plus in Cal! Concierge service excellent. Housekeeping excellent.
Look out for the fruit bats is you have a road-side room – spectacular:)

Still, probably the best downtown hotel in Kolkata. But if you want to live out of town, maybe also think of the epic and wonderful Sonar – my most unusual and most spacious hotel in India. It even has a Bukhara clone, and the most overstaffed breakfast in the world ;)

Cal is full-on India, and the Taj is in there…

Expensive hotels?

by avilasoa

I've been researching hotels in Kolkatta and they all seem to be very expensive... the ones that are available.. is this normal or could it be the time of year (October)

Re: Expensive hotels?

by Donna_in_India

Hi - what price range are you looking for?

Re: Expensive hotels?

by Kumarjit

No. The prices of the hotels that you are refering to is normal. I can understand from your query that you have been searching for hotels like The Kenilworth, The Golden Park, The Park, Oberoi Grand, Peerless Inn, The HHI, Taj Bengal, Hyatt Regency, ITC Sheraton, etc., etc.
The prices in these hotels range between $140 to $900. THe rates are somewhat constant all year round. All these hotels are luxury ones with a high standard of service in whatever way a customer can expect.
However, among these, you could try out The Golden Park and The Peerless Inn, which have lower rates than the rest of the hotels mentioned above.
Should you require any further information, do not hesitate to contact me at my email address mentioned in my homepage.
Regards
Kumarjit.
