Travel in and around Kalkata
by dinanath
After alighting from Kalka Mail train how does one commute to visit religions places/shrines in Kalkata especially when one is conducting a special tour of devotees mostly Kali Devotees. Special mention to be made about Dakshineshwari Temple and Kali Temple at Kalighat among other related religions places?

Travel Tips for Kolkata (Calcutta)
Ambassador Classic Cars
by georeiser
Ambassador Classic ("The king of Indian roads") is a car manufactured by Hindustan Motors of India. It has been in production since 1948 with few modifications or changes. And you really feel it when you enter the car. The car is a slow rattletrap with bad brakes. I felt unsecure in the car. Nearly all the taxis in Kolkata were Ambassador Classics.
Beat the Heat.
by goutammitra
For a large city like Kolkata it is very difficult to find recreation of your choice at resonable and affordable price. This city has grown by leaps and bounds abour 1096 Sq.Km and population 138 Million. so one can guess arranging space and entertainment is avery very difficult job. we have parks, swiming pools, lakes but all inadequate for a population of this size. Then travel time and mode of travel comes in consideration. However Calcutta is managing the show.
There are a few entertainment/ water parks have come up recently in Kolkata offering good fun at resonable price. Aquatica is one of them we frequent, because my daughter loves the dogs and the rides there. On Sundays and other holidays they also offer DJ show with professional dancers on their Wave Pool for the crowd to dance. It is estimated about 4-500 people throng there on Sunday. Good fun and way to Beat the Heat.
To and From the Airport by Taxi
by Guantanamera
Upon arrival in Calcutta, I took a taxi from the airport to my hotel... The total cost was 150 rupees... Upon the day of departure, I went to the front desk of my hotel and had them get me a taxi to take me back to the airport so I could catch my flight... Everything was arranged and the front desk clerk told me it would cost 200 rupees... Some people at a nearby travel agency had told me not to pay more than 160 or 170 rupees for the distance, and I had earlier paid only 150 for the same distance when arriving so I had an idea of what a fair price was... Still, I thought, well, it's only an extra 50 rupees, only about USD $1 more, so I agreed to the 200 rate with no problem...
Autorickshaw
by Rupanworld
Like every other mode of transport in Kolkata, autorickshaws have pretty low fares and being a foreigner, if the sharp turns of an auto does not scare you, you will enjoy the ride and the price. Autos generally take specific routes and are on shuttle systems which means that you cannot hire them, but share the journey with co-passengers.

by goutammitra about Sigree Flame & Grill Buffet Dinner
Yesterday 14th of April was our Bengali New Year's Day! We thought we shall revisit again Sigree and savour the dinner out there. What cold be the better occasion or this, after our not so good experience with Marco Polo's Bengali food this afternoon for lunch, this was really satisfiying. With added menu on the Grill side and main course, it was an excellent menu overall. This time they had added Skewered Prawns and Beckti Fish along with the regular Sheekh Kebab and others. In the main course, there was Mutton Biryani, Fish Chutniwala, Chicken and on dessert side there was famous Bengali Rasagolla, Sandesh, Jafrani Kheer, Ice Cream & Brownies to name a few. All this came for Rs. 350/- plus taxes. Service and crew member's behaviour was excellent and very helpful. A great satisfaction indeed!
