Where to Stay

by dsantosh about General info

The capital has several hotel resorts, which provide accommodation for tourists. There are a number of government guest houses, two tourist homes, and a circuit house. Besides, there are a number of resorts, cottages, and hotels run by private sector- and, the expenditure will definitely not burn a hole in any pocket.

Metered taxis are available and regular ferry services connect Port Blair to other inhabited islands. Port Blair offers a variety of delicious sea food, besides Indian, Chinese, Continental, and Burmese cuisine.

The Land of Naked people: encounters with a stone age islanders is about the jarawa of Andaman islands and written by Madhusree Mukherjee. It is an interesting read, occasionally reflecting the prejudices of the colonial settlers from mainland India to these islands. Easy to get this book in India

Try searching Andaman as a destination to - there are some people who have a lot of information about the area, including Port Blair. I found a few resources on arrival, and there were a few India travel guides (i.e., Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, etc) with some pages on Port Blair. I also remember seeing a short guide available in Chennai, perhaps 30 pages and a map - I don't remember the name, but it was part of a huge series on specific cities and areas. So information does exist. Good luck with it...

Travel Tips for Port Blair

Ross Island - in the wake of the Tsunami

by illumina

The Andaman Islands were hit quite badly by the Tsunami on Boxing Day 2004. According to the BBC news website, the entire landscape of the archepelago was substantially altered, with new land masses appearing to the north, and mangroves and coral reefs collapsing and disappearing in the south-east.

In this photo, you can just see how the sea wall has collapsed on to the beach. It's not the best evidence of the damage, but little was obvious when we visited (Mar 2009).
