Travel Tips for Chandigarh
Verka Milk Factory
The Verka Milk Factory is a great place to stop for some flavored milk when you first enter Chandigarh. This sweetened Almond flavored milk brought back memories of childhood trips to India. The only difference the milk is now served in juice-type boxes, instead of the glass milk bottles I remember. The milk still tasted great, but I missed the glass bottle.
This man-made 3km long lake was created in 1958 with the intension of the creators of Chandigarh to offer it to the citizens so that they can be at one with the lake and its environments and its tranquility shall be guaranteed by banning noises (which should be done countrywide!).
Paddle boats are available to hire for Rs30 (34p) for 30 mins, so I decided to take one out and have a bit of fun. So I paid in the booth and walked down to the waters edge and donned a red life jacket and got into one. I paddled out to the opposite shore and was receiving a lot of looks from the locals especially girls who I waved to and smiled at and they did the same and giggled!
Too Much Organization
I just returned from a couple of days in Chandigarh. Rigidly designed city, with broad tree-lined streets and well-behaved traffic. Shopping and administrative areas in demarcated sectors make everything easy to find by the ubiquitous pedi- or auto-rickshaw drivers.
Residents of Chandigarh are justifiably proud of their city, and they tend to look down at the chaotic disorganization of Delhi and other large Indian cities. Chandigarh is probably a great place to live, but the city is completely devoid of the chaotic charm that makes India so enthralling to most tourists. Walking down the street in most Indian cities is an adventure to most westerners. In Chandigarh, its just a walk down the street.
Go to Chandigarh if you have business there, but this not the place to experience India.
Only in India: Backup warning on small Tata automobile: medley of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and "Jingle Bells."
