Stick with bottled or boiled water. Good restaurants are OK, but use botled water and ensure salad is washed in filtered water.

To be on the safe side do not eat salad or drink tap water. I was there in October and because of the precautions I took I never got sick.

I am interested in this topic and am wondering if it is safe to eat salad anywhere, we will be in goa for 5 weeks and I love salad, especially in warm weather.

I just came back from Delhi 10 days ago. Although some of the street vendors food looks tempting, you are best to avoid it.

My advice would be to eat in decent restaurants or hotels. To be honest they are not expensive, were good quality and we were fine in Delhi.

Although some restaurants will wash the salads, you can bet your life they are not washing it in bottled water. I would avoid it. A place I stayed in Rajasthan made a big thing about washing salad etc, but I saw chefs (who certainly weren't washing their hands) with their hands dipped actually into the food they were serving out.

Just eat in decent restaurants and only eat cooked stuff. You will be fine like that even if your body starts craving fruit and salad. Don't worry, it will be fantastic! Enjoy yourself.

pete and the other people above are right. stick to good restaurants and drink bottled water/drinks only. i spent 6 weeks in new delhi in 2004 and i was fine. although i must admit it was hard not to eat some things from small vendors. india is not a place to be with gastro etc
if you really need to snack, then hit on mc donalds lol :-)
enjoy

pete and others.........

you do not need to wash salad in bottled water.I have been in Goa many tyimes and always have salad, the shacks where we eat washh in filtered water. most restaurants and hotels will have a water purifier, for that matter many houses and Malls have water purifier. this is OK to use 0 provided of course it is maintained. I dintthink any one washes in bottled water!

Generally , all good restaurants should be ok. In resorts where i go there are repeat customers and restaurants cant afford any bad publicity........

Sam - sorry, I probably didn't explain myself very well. I wasn't suggesting the food should be washed in bottled water, that would be stupid. My point was if even you have very hygienic standards in some areas of the kitchen and then one part of the process is very un-hygienic then there is a potential problem.

Travel Tips for Delhi

India gate

by husain

A monument to the forgotten British-Indian soldiers of the first World War...
A popular spot for locals to head out with their families and sit around - to the sprawling lawns around India gate/ Rajpath. Its pretty busy on weekends and also in the winter months, and theres usually a picnic atmosphere here...

National Rail Museum

by RAJASTHANBYCAR

National Rail Museum is located In Chanakya Puri. It is unique in its collection of rail engines and locomotives. India was among the countries which had railway lines since 19th century. The locomotives in the museums are displayed in open. But they also have a small in house museum which gives the details of the progress and development in the history of railway in India.
Children love a ride in the toy train that takes them around the museum on a miniature rail track.

Central Cottage Industries Emporium

This company was mentioned as being reputable and having good quality goods and there was no need to worry about purchasing here. That may be the case at times but definitely not in all. I know of an purchase of a carpet which in the store scattered amongst many others looked fine in proportion and the design was certainly lovely. Away from the store and back in the home country in a normal situation there were very clear indication that this carpet had been made by weavers with clearly two different tensions and the measurement of the rug was 3” out down one end which was very noticeable on its own. Months of discussion went on through local offices and the store who gave assurances of excellent quality of their craftsmen and customer satisfaction but did nothing about the con job they clearly pulled. So I would just say, just because these more expensive stores seem to be reputable, clearly not all are and are still able to get by with selling inferior quality goods at expensive prices. You might be better off at the little roadside store. Very much a case of BUYER BEWARE and check the measurements of what you are getting or being told.

Taxi

by Willettsworld

I only took taxi's to/from the airport. There are pre-paid booths inside both the domestic and international terminals. From the domestic terminal to Connaught place, they cost Rs170 and from the international terminal to Pahar Ganj, they cost Rs250. I didn't bother taking them around Delhi itself as auto rickshaws are cheaper, quicker and more fun/life threatening!
