Reliablle travel agent for Buddhist pilgrimage.

by virgi2001

My husband and I are traveling from Canada in order to tour the Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Does anyone have a tip or recommendation on a reliable source in India for setting up a guided tour?
We do not fit into the cookie cutter tourist packages that are available.
Any help would be great.:)

Hi, I've only been round the state of Maharashtra, but what I found was that most hotels have a tour desk, and you can just book with a tour company affiliated with the hotel to take you wherever you want to go. Those tour companies seemed to be small and independently run by local people, so our drivers could double as guides. Because such companies are affiliated with the hotel, nothing dodgy will go on because they know you know who to complain to - but we never had cause to complain anyway. And because of the currency differential, it is really not expensive to get your own driver and vehicle for the day this way. Plus, if the Buddhist sites you wish to visit are well known in the area, then it probably won't even be necessary to seek out a Buddhist driver/guide. In Mumbai, we got a taxi driver we liked to take us on a half-day tour of the city, and he showed us a Jain temple and a Parsi temple but I don't think he was either religion; and while in Aurangabad we had a Muslim driver who took us to sites that were sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. There's widespread understanding of each other's religions there, to say the least...

Check out Potala Tours. They could book all or portions of your trip. People I know who have used them have been happy with the service.

Hi one of the best best would be to get in touch with Lotus Trans Travels, they have their office in the business district in Rajendra Place New delhi, close to Connaught Place and you can take the metro rail to Rajendra Place Station. Their contact is as follows
Lotus Trans Travels
G-1 Gopala Tower,
Rajendra Place,
New Delhi - 110005

The best thing about this company is that they have their own hotels in all the major buddhist towns like Kushinagar, Sravasti and Bodhgaya.
Best of Luck and take care.

Travel Tips for Delhi

Red Fort

by Bjorgvin

Visit the Red Fort. Lal Qila (Red Fort) along the Yamuna River is built of red sandstone and surrounded by a wall of about 2.4km. The Mughal King Shah Jahan (the king who built the Taj Mahal of Agra) transferred his capital from Agra to Delhi in 1639 and the fort was completed in 1648. The fort has two main entrances, the Delhi Gate and the Lahori Gate. In this fort the king granted audiences to the public and to important persons. An interesting Light and Sound Show is held at the fort in the evenings.

Not really necesary

by diageva

You can buy nearly everything at Delhi, so don't have to bring much things. You will find lots of cheap clothes and if you dont have space for so many new things you can buy very good bags at very good prices. Close shoes cause there are lots of rubish in the floor. Not white clothes cause you will look so clean. Bring medicaments for stomach problems. You can find photo equipment without problems at good prices. Mosquito nettings are useless because the ceilings are very high, and I didn't find many mosquitos so ... no problem You will want to cover your head and will need sunglasses

Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum

by RAJASTHANBYCAR

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum was the residence of the former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. It was in this house that she was assassinated by her own Sikh bodyguards on 31st October 1984. The house was converted into a museum after her assassination.

The museum conserves some of the belongings of Indira Gandhi, including the sari she was wearing when she was assassinated. There is a collection of photographs, which record the Nationalist movement and the Nehru-Gandhi family.

A modest bungalow, it is furnished simply and hung with photographs narrating her life from childhood days with the Mahatma to later off-duty relaxation with her grandchildren Rahul, Priyanka and Varun. It is surrounded by a charming garden where you can hear Mrs. Gandhi's speeches from megaphones hidden in the bushes. It was in this garden that she was assassinated.

The spot where Indira Gandhi was assassinated is enclosed in a glass frame. One can still see the dried blood spots.

Interesting way of seeing Delhi

by HarShe

An intersting way of seeing parts of Delhi is by autorickshaw. However, beware - they can be very crowded! You could however negotiate with the driver and book the whole rickshaw for your family or group. The older style, 'open on all sides' is much better for looking around. And dont forget the Delhi pollution you will be exposed to. In any case it is an interesting experience as you share the ride with the locals, and cheap too.
