Late Arrival in Delhi - ok?

by juleswc

Hi Folks,
I'm booking flights to India today and have been offered a good price, but the flight doesn't arrive in to Delhi until 11pm at night.. Is it pretty easy to get a taxi at that time of night to a hotel?
we're backpacking, so we're watching our money etc, but if it's likely to be a problem I may well get a different flight.

Thanks

J

Been there only once so i dont know much about it but i am pretty sure that
it is hard to avoid getting a taxi at the airport in delhi. They are wery determined to get you into a car. The taxi offices outside the main door on the left is supposed to be serious companies.

Have a nice trip and try to be patient with them!!!!!

You will be fine. 11pm is almost still rush-hour!

I had the same problem this time last year so booked my first couple of nights accommodation at The Smyle Inn In Delhi and all that went fine, They also arranged an airport pick up and everything was ok and the price was Exactly what was quoted on the net !!
Details are on my India page under accommodation tips
You might find them useful
I hope that helps a little but If you need more info then feel free to drop me a line

11pm is not an odd hour as far as Delhi is concerned. There are some flights tht arrive at 2am too!! So no worry on the availabilty of taxi. There is a prepaid taxi counter. You tell them the area or the location of the hotel and you pay a fixed charge. This is better incase your hotel doesn't arrange a pick up.

If your hotel can arrange a pick up for you, it's the best even though you pay a bit higer amount because it is hassel free, sure and safe too.

As already mentioned finding a taxi is not a problem 24 hours a day in Delhi.

The problem at the airport is not getting pressured into one that is a scam. Do not be loured by ones that want you to walk to a private car or away from the terminal. They are "taxis", and will get you to where you want to go safely, but they will charge you ~double the standard fare since they do not use the meter and use a pre-calculated inflated cost.

Hi - If your hotel doesn't have free pickup (likely if you're backpacking), take the pre-paid taxi! It won't be that expensive and you'll know that you're safe and not getting ripped off! Enjoy!

Hey thanks folks for all your information :-) really helpful!!
booked the flights last night from my local airport - which saves all that travel to London (and cost).. really looking forward to India!! we're doing the northern part of India for about 2.5 weeks - so now looking forward to planning the trip :-)

Cheers

To be redundant, most international flights arrive late at night/early in the morning. There will be plenty of cabs, but go to the government certified (?) "taxi" window at the airport and get a voucher, rather than going with one of the guys who just try to get you to go with them. In any event, agree on the price first. It would be good for you to know where you are going to stay BEFORE you arrive, although there are people inside the airport arrival lounge that can help you if need be.

Nizamuddin dargah

by husain

The Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah, in south Delhi is the mausoleum of one of Indias most famous Sufi saints- Nizamuddin Auliya, who lived in the thirteenth century.
It is visited by many of people of all religions, and there is an ever-present crowd of devotees and mystics, and qawwali musicians.
Every Thursday, sufi musicians sing devotional qawwalis in honour of Hazrat Nizamuddin.

Its located across the road from Humayun's tomb, on Mathura road (and a short walk thru the meandering crowded lane...)

Delhi is one place from where...

by subrata

Delhi is one place from where the Mountains - Himalayas is just next door.
One can head for Manali in Himachal or
The Garwal in Uttar Pradesh or Kumaon in U.P.
These places are all overnight journey from Delhi.
For the visitor looking to more colorfull and
Cultural activities Rajasthan is the right place- also just an overnight journey.

Chandni Chowk

by keeweechic

Chandni Chowk is known as the Moonlight Bazaar. Located north of Connaught Place by about 6 kms. This was an ancient Mughal market in the old city, crowded and busy and full of craftsmen, cobblers, rickshaws, fortune-teller and shoppers. Down narrow lanes there are colourful stores of materials and silks and jewellery. These old bazaars still seem to retain a souk-like characteristic.

Leaving by Train

by illumina

On the day we left, we caught the train from New Delhi Railway Station to Agra. We'd booked it the day before, and after a bit of hassle (please do look at my Warning tip), found it very easy to sort out.

The Tourist reservation office is upstairs in the main building, and the staff are very helpful. REMEMBER TO TAKE YOUR PASSPORTS! Very important, if you don't have them on you, which for some reason we didn't, they can't put you on the tourist quota and will have to find space for you within the local quota, which may well be fully-booked.

The ticket has the time of departure and numbers of the train, carriage and seat number clearly marked on it, and the carriage will have a printout posted up with your name, age, sex and seat number also, so you can check you have the right one!

2nd class has open compartments of 6 bunks in three tiers, with another two bunk across the corridor. The middle bunk is usually put up against the wall during the day so that people can sit on the lower bunk. You'll probably get lots of people talking to you while you travel!
