Fifth city of Delhi- DIN PANAH
by Rupanworld
For sometime, the capital of the rulers of India was in Agra, but Mughal ruler Babar again chose Delhi as capital and came here. His son Humayun built the fifth city of Delhi and named it as Din Panah. It was built in the area between the Purana Qila and the Feroz Shah Kotla in 1526AD.
Sleepless nights without earplugs!
by halfbeat
Ear plugs!!!! I didnt take any with me when i went to Delhi, and the nights in the hotel were terrible!!! I guess if you are staying in one of the big 5 star hotels you would be fine, but the hotel i was in was right in the centre of the Karol bagh area, and wasn't particularly good, and so the noise all night was awful. Constant shouting and engine noise, car horns and dogs barking. If you want to get a good nights sleep in this area... take some earplugs or get a hotel further out in new Delhi where it seemed to be a lot quieter.

E-mailing and accessing the net is important when travelling. The Gold Regency Hotel in Paharganj has a great internet caf?. Cheap and open almost all the time (and no breakdowns as far as I experienced!).
The hotel itself is quite fancy, but don't be deterred even if you are a backpacker like we were. The internet café is on the (or one of the) top floor. Ask the doorman, or walk straight in to the elevators. Once in the café, you will be given a queue number, but there are so many computers here that the lines move along quickly.
Bus from Delhi to Bikaner
by tremendopunto
Due to railwayconstructions there was no reasonable connection to Bikaner anymoe. The detour would just take way too long. So we took the bus from the Serai Khale Khan bus adda (station) thanks to the help of UMA SHANKER here on VT! Thanks for the tip!
The first day in India:
Well, I checked out the station immediately after my arrival. I was told it was not possible to get the ticket in advance (when I was there), so we showed up early enough on the day of our planned departure. At the desk we were still told that the bus leaves at 22:00 o`clock and that he, the guy at the desk, could not sell in advance.
Ok, we thought, still used to the Western style of lining up and waiting in trust of the good of human beeing. Well, when the bell hit 22:00 we finally bought our tickets and were looking forward to our "cozy" seats in the bus..................just to find all the people already sitting in the overcrowded bus or still pushing into it without any tickets (most of them)......
Because the Indian style is rushing into the bus as soon as possible, grabbing a seat and buying the ticket ON the bus........ok, we still managed to get a seat, at least half of my butt had a seat for the next 10 hours of night bus ride through the dark.
But since then we adjusted well to the system jumping over kids pushing away the old, the weak and the disabled to get a seat in a darwinistic style - survival of the fittest....
STOP! Of course Im just kidding, but getting a seat can really become an adventure for itself.
According to some tickets in sanskrit which I cant read, the ticket price was 235 Rupees for the 10h ride.
Metro connections to train stations
by husain
For travellers arriving into Delhi at the New Delhi or the Old Delhi (Delhi Junction) stations, theres the added option to tave the metro service which connects to these two stations. There are underground stations just outside both these railway stations. You can find connections to North and West Delhi and to Connaught place etc... Its a pretty conventent way to do things, rather than have to deal with finding a cab or auto-rickshaw etc...
