Lot of places to visit
by srhussaini
The Gardens - Though Delhi is fast being converted into a concrete jungle, the Delhi Development Authority is trying best to provide the residents of Delhi with some greenery by construction of parks and gardens. The DDA has also installed some musical fountains at specific locations which are worth visiting. Being part of the Aravalies
Central Park
by Willettsworld
Opened in 1931 and named after the Duke of Connaught, Connaught Place, (which has now, like most things in India, been renamed Rajiv Chowk but is locally known simply as CP), is a series of circular roads around a central park. It was designed by Robert Tor Russell and features archways and colonnades but is showing its age and needs a good coat of white paint. The central park area was closed when I first visited Delhi in November 2006 but was open with people stretched out on the grass when I came back in March 2007. I believe it was redesigned and re-opened in December and is closed on Mondays. It's a popular place to watch middle class Delhites.
A Day Trip to Kurukshetra
by Scarlie
Kurukshetra is a city about 170km or so to the north in Haryana. It's difficult to judge but it took us about 2.5 hours to get there. The final battle in Mahabharata took place there, and perhaps this is why there is a Krishna Museum. IN addition, you can visit the Panorama and Science Museum and the Brahma Sarover and take a walk or have a picnic in the Chaudhari Devi Lal Park.
Kurukshetra is not on the list of destinations on VT, so I"ll post my tips in the "Off the beaten path' section on the Delhi page.
Spice Market
by Willettsworld
Old Delhi's spice market is said to be the largest in Asia. There are dozens of stalls and shops lining the main street of Khari Baoli with sacks full of nuts and spices spilling over onto the all ready crowded pavement and even on the roads. The atmosphere in the area is extremely hectic with everyone doing their own thing by whatever means they can. Gadodia Market, which lies just south of Khari Baoli, is a spice wholesaler's storage area. The entrance is through a covered arcade that directly takes visitors into a small courtyard lined with storerooms with giant-sized old-fashioned weighing scales, loading, carrying or unloading of huge sacks of items from manual trolleys. Built by Seth Lakshmi Narayan Gadodia in the early 20th century, the first thing you do when you enter is sneeze as the smell and dust gets right up your nose! Even the locals were doing it!
