Dolls dressed in Indian costumes
by Littlered415
We will be on a tour that visits Delhi, Jaipur, Agra and Varanasi. We will only have a couple a days in each city and very little free time. I collect dolls from the countries I visit. Are there any stores or markets in the above cities where I can purchase these dolls? Which areas of the cities would probably carry these type of dolls?
Can anyone recommend any stores or markets in the above cities that carry Indian made 14kt, 18kt or 22kt gold jewelry?
Are Indian silk scarves a good buy?
Thanks

It's funny but I never came across such dolls. I used to look for gifts for my nieces and the only thing I found was a Barbie dressed in a sari!
We normally don't make purchases at tourist attraction shops but the store in Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur had some beautiful silk and handpainted items including scarves, bedspreads, etc. You will find alot of beautiful things in Jaipur. Watch out in Agra though - very aggressive touts and shopkeepers!!

To add, in Delhi I have visited Rajiv Chowk many times which has many handicraft, jewelry and souvenirs shops located there. But the first rule is to haggle they are known for overprizing!!

I have bought small dolls at Palika Bazaar in Delhi- they were sculpted from clay, and dressed in Indian attire.
The bazaars are probably best to find gold, but do make sure that you are not being fleeced regarding price. Always shop around for best price, which can be negotiated.
Silk scarves are a good buy, but again- make sure that the quality is good- Varanasi has a great shop near Assi Ghat, where I bought the best quality. Varanasi has best quality of silk.

I'd go to the government-run (and therefore price-controlled, with no bargaining) Central Cottage Industries Emporium in New Delhi, on Janpath, near Connaught Place, ie very central. They offer a very wide variety of handicrafts from all over the country.

Hi there,
My name's Nick and I was just having a look through this website and I came across your message. I will also be travelling in the places you mentioned. Are you by any chance doing the STA tour? Also, does your tour leave on the 7th November from Delhi?
If this is the case when do you arrive in Delhi? Because I will be arriving on the 4th November and have a few days to kill before we leave.
If you could get back to me that would be great. My email's nocques@hotmail.com

Lotus Temple
by husain
The bahai house of worship, or the Lotus temple, in south Delhi, is one of the cities popular tourist attractions...
This interesting and innovative design- where the structure resembles a lotus flower, and has won numerous awards for architecture- is actually a minimal prayer hall from the inside. http://www.bahaindia.org/temple/index.html
Packing List
by Bjorgvin
Travel as light as you can. Don’t pack too many clothes as you can buy them very cheaply over there. Wear long cotton trousers, not shorts, and cotton shirts or T-shirts. Long sleeved shirts are better because they keep the mosquitoes out. Bring along a hat or a cap to shelter from the sun, and strong sensible shoes or slippers. When visiting a temple or other venerated places, it is obligatory to leave your shoes outside. Ask your doctor about health risks. Vaccination could be necessary. It is very wise to bring along toilet paper. Sometimes it is not there when you need it! Medicines for malaria, stomach disorder, diarrhea and anti-mosquito spray (or cream) are a necessity. Bring sunscreen, lip moisturizer, shampoo, and toothpaste. A small first aid kit could be priceless. Bring plenty of films and extra batteries for your camera(s).

The best immersion into daily commuting
by Skigirl
Although being a westerner and treated somewhat like a fish in bowl with onlookers peering to get a glimpse of the westerners, the auto rickshaw is the best way to travel. Fresh Delhi air and a sense of keen adventure describes navigating the streets of Dehli by this unique tripodian experience. Do negotiate price up front and make sure you have your destination in mind or they will try to take you to the emporium which is a 4 story tourist trap! Shop the open markets and be with the people it is facinating and mind-boggling to immerse yourself in such a densely populated society.
