Mosquitos and Hotels....
by twandola
Greetings, My wife and I will be traveling to Northern India on January 28th-March 4th. Can anyone suggest a decent mid-range hotel (20-50$ US) for the night of our arrival. We were thinking about the Broadway hotel in old Delhi, or the wongdhen house in Majnu Ka Tilla neighborhood. We would like to stay somewhere with good food, and perhaps other travelers as we begin to adjust to travel in India.
Also, we plan on spending most of our time in McCleod Ganj, Amritsar, Rishikesh, and Varanasi. Do any of these places require a mosquito net during the winter months.
Thank you for any advice and we are certainly open to any suggestions for food or accommodations in any of the places I listed......
Thanks again

Re: Hotel Broadway. The hotel's restaurant, Chor Bizarre, is good. The location is far from Connaught Place, but close to Chandni Chowk, the Red Fort, and both the Gandhi Museum and Gandhi Memorial. (See my Delhi page for further information.)

I had been to rishikesh and stayed at the hotel of the garwal mandal, i found out it was clean and there were no mosquitoes.
Any way there are mosquitoes coils and creams available here in rishikesh.
For staying in rishikesh you can visit www.gmvn.com

Hi
I have just returned from another trip to India- and I can thoroughly recommend a guest house in East Nizamuddin called "Eleven"
The owner,Ajay Anand is fabulous- kind & helpful in every way, and the accomodation is clean and very comfortable. Ajajy can arrange a pick up for you fromairport or Train Station. Cost is minimal. Area is green, and in best area of Delhi, near India Gate.Email is Elevendelhi@gmail.com & phone number is 91 1124351225

There are certainly many mosquitos in Varanasi at the end of February. I did not experience any in Delhi or any of the other northern cities at thia time of year. In Varanasi, having been savaged on our first night, we had to get the our hotel to spray the room each night when we went out. Then, when we returned, we had the lovely job of getting rid of the dead flies from the beds, furniture etc.
I dread to think what they were spraying around the room as it smelt very toxic however this was a long time ago & has probably been replaced by a better product now -but it certainly dealt with the mosquitos!!

Dear
In Delhi: you can stay in Karolbagh area, there u will find decent mid-range hotel (2 star) like Pablas iNternational, Surya Shelter, Florence Inn, Regent Continental, Singh Palace, White house. They will be in the range of Rs. 1000/1800 per Dbl room with breakfast. They have best connectivity from Delhi, metro station is also there. It is near to New Delhi railway station and connaught place. Distance from International airport is 40 km and take max 45 min/01 hrs depend on traffic. Near to old Delhi also.

Travel Tips for Delhi
The Rajpath
by SirRichard
This modern area of Delhi, from Rashtrapati Bhavan to the Gate of India (see photo) was built in a colonial style to house the Government Buildings since 1931.
The wideness of spaces here make a bizarre contrast with the narrow crowded old part.
The Gate of India Monument is an hommage to indian soldiers fallen defending the British Empire.
Dirty but ...
by diageva
Its true that is dirty ... you will find rubbish in the great part of Delhi, but there are parts, of new Delhi where everything is clean.
The white walls of Connaught Place where full of red of something they chew and then thow from the mouth making the wall really dirty and ugly :)
But people don't look to be dirty they look always clean and handsome :)))

Dilli Haat: Local crafts etc
by husain about Dilli Haat
For handicrafts etc- Dilli Haat, Crafts museum, Sarojni nagar market, Janpath...
Dilli Haat is the place i`d reccomend. The stalls are let out to the craftsmen from different regions and there is always some kind of festival/ theme going on. Bargaining is the norm.
There are many food stalls too, managed by tourism departments from the various states. So you an sample a good variety of Indian cuisine...
Shopping malls and markets- Ansal plaza, Connaught place, Khan market, Greater kailash-1, South extension....
There has been a spurt in building huge-swanky shopping malls recently, in every corner thats available. A lot of them have sprung up on the Delhi-Gurgaon highway. at some shops at dilli haat, sarojni nagar, janpath and at lajpat nagar, bargaining is expected... the stuff is relatievly inexpensive in anycase.
The Delhi Metro
by husain
My first ride on the Delhi metro came while shooting a tv show...
It dosent connect the city in a big way yet, but its network has been growing, and the first phase of the network is already in place. The next 2 phases will be ready in time for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. There is now a station at Connaught place, which may be of help to travellers-tourists. The metro connects you to the Red fort/ Chandni chowk/ Delhi University/ trans Yamuna areas/ Dwarka... and more areas.
Line 2, or the Yellow line, is useful for getting to Old Delhi (Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid, etc) and New Delhi railway stations as well as the ISBT bus terminal. Fares range from Rs. 6 to 22.
The next phase is connecting the south Delhi areas and the satellite townships of Noida and Gurgaon. Once completed, it is scheduled to become one of the largest metro networks in the world.
Oh and clicking pictures at Metro stations and inside the trains is strictly forbidden and you could get into some trouble with the secirity if you are seen doing so...
