What happened at night?
by l_joo
At night when me and Andy were waiting some 2 hours impatiently on the bus to Amritsar, the location was at the roadside somewhere opposite the Red Fort, time was around 9.30pm and yet the bus driver still in no mood to start the engine. While waiting, we saw many homeless peoples began to lie down each by each in the middle of the highway, its not one or two or three peoples, its twenty, forty and counting all the way and they are not just men but women. Many of them sleep just anywhere without even a sheet. The photo here is taken from the Red Fort area where I saw them sleeping in the middle of street while those big trucks one by one drove by with thick heavy smoke all over and those terrible horn blastings. That moment me and Andy looking at each other speechless and my brain was spinning double the speed of thinking, ruminating.
Metro
by Applelyn
Metro is first introduced in Delhi in 2002 and it is fast, clean and convenient. It is a nice change from the normal public transport and the staff is helpful. Price varies and there are 1-Day and 3-Days tourist cards if you want to use metro as a main transport during your stay.
India Gate
by Hui-Hui
The grand gate is a copy of "Arc de Triomphe" as the landmark of New Delhi. On the top it was craved big "INDIA" and also names of soliders who had been gone for WW1 on otherwhere. It's not allowed to walk under the gate where some soldiers with real guns guard the important place. Rashtrapati Bhawan (President's residence) is just in front of India Gate as the other end of Rajapath Road. Anyway, it's a must-see place in New Delhi.
Connaught Place
by NEILHALLIDYA
I made several trip to Connaught Place and eventually managed to orientate myself. The area is meant to have been built around 3 inner circles but the outer two are very confusing.
Regardless, in the inner circle you will find western shops. Pizza Hut, Wimpeys, Fridays Restaurants et al. This is not traditional India but if you want a respite from all that this is the place to go to.
Unless you are very rich I wouldnt recommend shopping here.
ISKCON Temple
by DaDrifter
The ISKCON temple is located in the Sant Nagar area of south Delhi (near Nehru Place), a few minutes drive from the famous Lotus Temple.
Better known as the Hare Krishna movement, ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) was established in 1966 by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Praphupada. The mission of this nonsectarian and monotheistic movement is to promote the well being of society by teaching the science of Krishna consciousness according to Bhagavad-Gita and other ancient Hindu scriptures.
The temple complex also has a good vegetarian restaurant (Govinda), a library and a hi-tech animatronics show. The animatronics show has robots that preach from the Gita. The Vegetarian Thali at Govinda is a foodie's delight.
