Travel Tips for New Delhi

Hotel Cateogaries

by maneckk

The hotels in delhi can be broadly divided into 3 major cateogaries,

Budget Hotels or B&B lodging – The cheapest options are hotels in Paharganj - close to the central business district of Delhi (Connaught Place) and the New Delhi Railway Station. The second option for budget accommodation is Karol Bagh with similar hotels as Paharganj. These hotels are mostly used by backpackers and the budget traveler and don’t always give you what they promise. They are not very highly rated in the city and so a review about these hotels is not possible.

3 star/ 4 star hotels – This kind of lodging is the most popular among the traveler since it provides a nice clean and decent accommodation in safe neighborhoods. Connaught Place has a no. of 3 star hotels with prices ranging from Rs. 3000/ night to Rs. 10000/ night. Its advisable to read traveler reviews before booking a hotel though.

5 star/ Luxury hotels – These is the most expensive and sought after hotels by the luxury traveler and each hotel has its own distinct characteristic and hospitality. Most of the 5 star hotels and resorts have their own websites for bookings and you can contact them through your travel agents for good deals too. But, do always check the websites mentioned below for good deals on hotels and travel.

by lynnehamman about KHAN MARKET

Khan Market is not really a market. It is a collection of chic designer boutiques, trendy ayurvedic cosmetic shops, and designer shops - Nike, Adidas and Body Shop were familier to me. This market has been dubiously noted as being the most expensive shopping area in Delhi. It's many shops cater to ex-pats, and I saw many familier products, even from Australia . The Diplomatic Enclave is nearby.
There are, however, also good bookshops, chemist outlets and a host of trendy restuarants and coffee-shops. One is spoiled for choice with food. There is something for every budget and taste-bud. (Big Chill, Subway & Cafe Turtle)
Khan is frequented by ex-pats and well-heeled locals- prices are fixed, so don't even try and bargain. We also noted that there were very professional tailor shops.
We also noted- Hobby Shops, Pet stores, Music stores and Optical Suppliers. Just about everything is available here-
Designer Labels Everything has a fixed price, but is always cheaper than "back home"

The flavour of South India!

by intencity about Andhra Pradesh State Canteen.

A great south Indian food joint is at the state canteen at Andhra Bhawan, Ashoka Road- they make great chicken curries ( this place has eat as much as you can for Rs 50/- -little less than a dollar-but that does not mean that you will get bad food). The Rs 50/- eat as much as you can.

Jama Masjid

by jmmorgan

After the Red Fort you can get a rickshaw (negotiate the price carefully!) to the nearby Jama Masjid. Ask your driver to take you through Chadni Chowk Bazaar on the way.
This mosque is the oldest in al;l India and was built in 1658 from Red sandstone and white marble
Approach up the broad steps and pause to leave your shoes outside before entry. If you are considered innappropriately dressed you will be given something to cover yourself with. This is a busy mosque used by thousands of Muslims daily.
There are great views in all directions across Old Delhi from the mosque

Government Buildings New Delhi

by jmmorgan

Whereas Old Delhi consists of narrow, congested streets New Delhi is the exact opposite with wide, tree lined boulevards.
This is the Delhi famously designed by Lutyens. Along Rajpath from the India gate there are ornamental ponds and lawns to wander on. At the far end of Rajpath is the Presedential palace and the Secretariat buildings.
