Cheap cheap clothes...
by bashboo
If you have some time and if you have a knack for finding a bargain, then this place is just what you should do if you want to get some really good deals on clothes while you are in india. the kind of stuff you will find here will be mostly stuff that has not made it to our export houses or abroad for whatever reason, it could be that it was an excess order or that the pieces have small or even major faults, stitching out of place, a bit dirty, a hole or wrongly labelled. to get the best of this market you will need a LOT OF PATIENCE to riffle through piles and piles of clothes, pick your favourite, find any major faults with the item (sometimes tiny stickers are put on next to the faults)...then you should haggle with the shop keeper unless you picked up from a pre-marked jumble sale pile (there will be a hanging sign above it). take the item home/to your hotel, launder it and trust me, i go to this market very often, the stuff looks as if it were bought in any good shop.
The market is called Sarojini Nagar market.
too large to walk
by josephescu
Major tourist sights to be found around Old Delhi (generally, the old walled city west from Red Fort), where most Moghul era monuments are. The sights of the colonial era are to be found in the New Delhi, around Rajpath, and in the vicinity of huge New Delhi’s Connaught pl. Shutting between attractions in tuk-tuks is quickest on Sundays when there’s less traffic, note that many sites are closed on Mondays. Walking is ok, but consider distances are huge.
Qutb Minar
by SmileyLeSa
The architecture of all the structures found in the Qutb Minar complex is extraordinary. I believe they are based on early Afghan design. Many of the structures are originally from the 1100s. Qutb Minar is the main tower found within the Qutb Minar complex.
INDIA GATE- A MEMMORIAL FOR WAR HEROS
by kmohandas
India Gate, which is also known as the All India War Memorial, was designed and constructed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the legendary architect and designer of New Delhi. This marvelous piece of architecture was constructed as a war memorial in the memory of 90,00 soldiers who laid down their lives during world war I. The foundation stone was laid by the Duke of Connaught in 1921. The monument was dedicated to the nation 10 years later by the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin. India Gate is 42 m tall.
Amar Jawan Jyoti was added later in memory of Indian soldiers who lost their lives in many other wars after India’s independence. It is in the form of a flame that burns day and night under the arch to remind the nation of soldiers who perished in the War of December 1971 during liberation of Bangladesh.
The entire arch stands on a low base of red Bharatpur stone and rises in stages to a huge cornice, beneath which are inscribed Imperial suns. Above on both sides is inscribed INDIA, flanked by MCM and to the right, XIX. The shallow domed bowl at the top was intended to be filled with burning oil on anniversaries.
Nowadays, it is a crowded area during the summer evenings. People in large numbers throng this area during summer months to have ice cream. During winter months, it is a popular picnic ground. A view of Rashtrapathi Bhavan from here provides a magnificent view.
