Hotel in Varanasi

by into-thin-air about Scindhia Guest House

Not a bad choice for Varanasi, Especially if one of the cheaper rooms in the old section of the hotel is available, I paid 250r for a simple room, none en-suite, But it did have a window that overlooked the Ganges.
You might find this a Very Regimented Hotel as there are notices Everywhere !! There is a restaurant attached to hotel But I wasn’t impressed, over priced and poor service, although the food wasn’t bad so ok in an emergency !!

Although the room that I had represented good value, the trips organised by the hotel are Very Expensive, If you organise a taxi trough them then expect to pay more than double the going rate and the internet acess is triple what you pay in the Hotel Alka which is only a 5 minute walk up-river.
The only exception is that IF you are on your own then the 85r Ganges Boat trips represent Good Value

HEY,

Just got back from India a couple of days ago ...min time in Agra is one day and u can do both the Taj and the Red fort .The taj will cost u 750 Rupees to get in and the ticket says the Red fort as well but that is actually another 200 Ruppees using your Taj ticket. If u need to stop super guest house is fine and the rooms have aircn and such.
From there overnite train to Varannasi but beware of the motorcyle touts from the train station they are tough but u should pay no more than 50/60 Rupees into town.A better place to stay is the Hotel Alka but definately get a room with aircon or water fan as it is very hot and prebook it.

Go for a wander by the water do a boat ride either morning or nite , go watch the 2 religious ceromonies that start at sunset and maybe have a look at the burning Ghats if that holds your interest.Maybe 1/2 nites there and u could be on the way..

and that is all i can help u with have a great trip...

Hotel in Varanasi: Sahi River View Guesthouse, Alka or any other?

by Leo2006

Hi,

I am trying to choose a hotel in Varanasi. My requiremenents are standard: clean, AC, hot water, private bathroom. Better, close to central ghats (I understand that Sahi River View Guesthouse is far away from central Ghats). Additionally, the hotel must be quiet (no traffic noise, no other noises).
I found several recommendations: Hotel Alka, Sahi River View Guesthouse, then Palace on River (Rashmi Guest House), etc.
Which hotel is really quiet at night, and clean?

What are the ways?

by You_Travel

Hello, Can you help me figure out how long would it take a budget traveler to tour around agra, lucknow and varanassi?

Re: What are the ways?

by jethanand

From New Delhi to Agra by overnight train (or bus) and back in 2 1/2 days. We spent 1 full day going around Agra, could have spent more time, but we had just enough time to be able to check it off our list.

About Lucknow or Varansi, I have not done the journey myself. I am guessing train travel to Varanasi (or Lucknow) and back would take you 1 1/2 days. Add to that the days you want to spend on arrival.

Well, for Agra, I feel, this suggestion is appropriate.

For Lucknow & Varanasi.....
a) Lucknow......Capital of Uttar Pradesh is 6.5hrs away from Natinal Capital i.e. New Delhi. U will find lot of trains but the best is Shatabdi Express. Choice is urs.

b) Varanasi......A holy and oldest Living city is approximately 16hrs from New Delhi and on the way u will find Lucknow. Varanasi is approx 7 hours from Lucknow and u can catch Kashi Vishwanath Express for Varanasi either from Lucknow or New Delhi.

I hope this will be sufficient....futher queries are welcome.

Keep smiling

That is very good information and I am glad of it. Do you have any suggestion for the minimum time one would spend in each city looking around? Thanks in advance.

Well, regarding stay period in each city....I think 2 days are more than sufficient individually for each city to roam around.

Two days in Agra will be sufficient, two days in Varanasi as well, I cannot say anything about Lucknow. There is a night train from Agra to Varanasi that goes via Lucknow as far as I remember - check the indian rail website.
Happy travels

Travel Tips for New Delhi

Mighty Mughal's last seat

by Tijavi

As Delhi's largest single monument in terms of occupied land area, the Red Fort (Lal Quila) is a must see for first timers in the city. Made of red sandstone, it was completed in 1648 by Shah Jahan (yes, of the Taj Mahal fame) after a decade of construction.

It was the mighty Mughals' last seat of power before they were deposed by the British in 1858. With its grandiose throne halls, magnificent mosques and elegant palaces, is a fitting reminder of the glory days of the mighty Mughals.

National museum: Stone lintel of TRIMURTI

by FruitLover

Lintel showing TRINITY;
made of stone, 12th century AD.

The TRIMURTI - also called the Hindu TRINITY - is a concept that God has three aspects of the one and the same God. The three aspects of God, or "Parabrahman," or God's personae are as Brahma (the Source/Creator), Vishnu (the Preserver/Indwelling-life) and Shiva (the Transformer -Destroyer/Creator).

The females behind the male trinity:
Brahma's consort is Sarasvati, the goddess of speech and learning.
Vishnu's consort Lakshmi, is the Goddess of beauty and fortune.
Durga, is the consort of Shiva.

The fine art of Pietra Dura

by DaDrifter

Pietra Dura is the technique of laying precious and semi-precious hard stones in a specially prepared surface of marble. Pietra Dura gained prominence in mughal architecture, during the times of emperor Shah Jahan and some very fine examples of this art can be found in most palaces and mausoleums constructed during his reign. Some exquisite designs in carved and inlaid marble can be seen at the Red Fort pavilions.
