Pay Respect at Gandhi Memorial- Raj Ghat
by lynnehamman
Seeing this simple. black marble platform - standing on the spot where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated on 31st January 1948- was the high point of my visit to Delhi. The eternal flame burns, and flowers are placed on it by visitors who come to pay homage to the memory of this unique and unforgettable man.
Even after so many years, the feeling of reverence persists. ( I am not sure Gandhi would have liked this- he had a great sense of fun and loved people). But everyone, including us, was speaking in hushed tones.
On the memorial stands the epitaph "He Ram" wchich means O God in Hindi. They were the last words spoken by Gandhi.
Leading to the memorial is a stone path, with lawns on either side.A museum is also located on the grounds.
Shoes must be left at the gate.
RAJPATH- THE ROYAL PATH
by kmohandas
Republic Day Parade, which is the biggest annual national event in India, takes place on 26th January every year at Rajpath. .Rajpath, which was formerly known as King's Way is the ceremonial boulevard in the heart of New Delhi. Rajpath starts from Rashtrapati Bhavan, passes through Vijay Chowk, India Gate and extends up to the National Stadium. This boulevard is flanked, on both sides, with trees, grass, fountains and other water bodies.
The western end of Rajpath is the Rashtrapati Bhavan or Presidential estate, which was the Viceroy's residence during colonial era. As we go along Rajpath, across Raisina Hill, we find the two secretarial buildings - North Block and South Block on its either side. The North and South Secretariat Buildings now houses many top government offices including Prime Minister’s office. One can also see the Parliament House along the stretch of this wide road. Rajpath is surrounded by many other official buildings, monuments and museums .If you stand near North Block and look towards India Gate, you can have a full view of Rajpath. This view is really amazing. Please do not miss it when you come to Delhi.
