Red Fort
by josephescu
The sandstone walls of the Red Fort extend over 2km and vary in height from 1m on the river side to 33m on the city side. Shah Jahan began construction of the massive fort in 1638 and it was completed 10 yeas later. However, Shaj Jahan never completely moved the capital from Agra to his new city of Shah_Jahan_Abad, because he was imprisoned in the Agra fort by his son.
The Red Fort dates from the very peak of the Mughal power, but the mughal reign from Delhi was a short one. The son of Shah Jahan (Aurangzeb) was the first and the last Mughal emperor to rule from here.
The Red Fort was conceived as a whole, and subsequent modifications have not taken away from the overall unity of the scheme. In the 18th century, however, occupiers and looters damaged some sections of the palace. After the a mutiny of 1857, the British army occupied and destroyed about four-fifths of its pavilions and gardens. A program for restoring the surviving parts of the fort began in 1903.
Closed on Mondays.
