Advise in sight seeing.

by technocrat.mani

Hi.. i will be in Delhi in the next week with my family and i have onward journeys to mumbai,goa.. Im staying in Grand sartaj hotel in a place called Aurobindo Marg. I have only one and a half day to see Delhi. They say the hotel is near Qutub minar and lotus temple. I just want to plan my sightseeing(places to see in the evenings and day)We arrive on one evening, stay for the full next day and depart the day after. Is is advisable to hire a taxi for a day or make instant arrangments?

You can get private cars on 80 Kms. and 8 hours basis. Extra Km. or Extra hour means extra charges. If you hire a good taxi, the charges are between Rs.10/- to Rs.15/- per Kilometer. Drop there in the hotel take rest. Ask the hotel management to hire a taxi for the next day. Here there are other private A/C bus operators, who are doing sightseeing business. You can inquire from the Hotel. Your Hotel is 2-3 Kms away from Qutub minar.

I agree with the above posting, we also hired a car out through our hotel earlier this year, ok a little more expensive that we would have paid if we had negotiated for our own on the street but a Nice, clean and fairly new car.
I have listed the “Must” see places in Delhi on my India page with pics – it Might ?? be worthwhile you taking a look then you can prioritise which you most want to see
Hope that helps a little
Happy Travels

Qutub would be around 5 Km from your hotel and Lotus temple around 8 km.Metro rail construction is going on infront of the hotel you have booked so the road gets its share of traffic jam at peak hours.India Gate is also within 10 Km from your hotel.Red Fort another 5-7 Km from there.

Travel Tips for New Delhi

Meditation zone

by bashboo

It might feature in some guide books, but in central delhi there is a gurduara Bangla Sahib. it is a temple for people of the sikh religion but anyone can go here at any time of day or night. at certain times you can witness the holy book being tucked into bed - there is no translation for this, sorry! and being brought back out in the morning, i think the timings for this are 11pm and 4am or something similar. go any time you like and just sit by the water reservoir, it is a lovely place to contemplate, meditate or just watch...

Indian-Chinese cuisine

by Hui-Hui about Lotus Pond

There is some Chinese ambience in the restaurant and the food served there is really close to Chinese cuisine. However the serving speed is pretty low and the waiters are less professional... Anyway, if I had not been with tour group, I wouldn't have liked to try Chinese food in India. The Spring roll is exactly the same as what I have in Taiwan. :)

Raj Path

by Luchonda

Raj Path - the wide boulevard in Dehli connects the Rashtrapati Bhavan - the presidential Palace in the west and the famous India Gate in the east.
On the 26th of januari (day of the republic) - Raj Path is the scenary of military parades with elephants and camels.
The day i visited this boulevard - it was empty.
About 15km further - you can vist the Qutab Minar complex.

Humayun's Tomb Complex

by DaDrifter

Also located within the Humayun tomb complex are a number of smaller tombs, entrance gates and mosques, including the Isa Khan Tomb and Mosque enclosure, Afsarwala Tomb, Barber's Tomb and the magnificent Arab Seria Gate.

Isa Khan Niyazi was a nobel in the court of Sher Shah Suri. The octagonal tomb and platform in the picture pre-dates the Himayun's Tomb by 20 years.

Please see the travelogue Stories in Stones - Humayun's Tomb for a few more pictures.

National Museum - Indian Textiles [III]

After the 15th century art of miniature paintings became very popular among the Indian rulers to portray their lifestyle, hobbies and day to day activities. These paintings also help a lot to understand the material culture, technologies, fashions and traditions of that period.

The reconstructed royal chamber showcase gives a glympse of the lyfestyle of the royals and nobles of 18-19th century. Qanat (tent hanging), chandoba (canopy), ja-jam (big floor spread), zari carpet, bolaster, cushion were the main items used to make the seating arrangement comfortable and elegant in a royal chamber.

Huqqa (smoking pipe for tobacco), pandan (betel leave container), ugaldan (spittoon), sailabchi (wash-basin), aftab (water vessel), gulab pash (rose-water sprinkler), shamadan (candle stand) - are the items used by the rulers in their day to day life.
