Cab or rented car?

by ladyleo0408

Namaste VTers,

I will be arriving in New Delhi alone on 19 Nov in the evening. Is it safe for me to take a cab from the airport to the hotel or would I be better off in a rented car?

If the latter option is a better one, can someone please send me a link to a reputable car rental company so I can make my travel arrangements?

Any other safety warnings will be greatly appreciated.

Bohot-bohot syukriya...

Regards,
Herny

Namaste Henry,
Take a pre paid cab from the airport. Just goto the prepaid cab counter and prepay for your ride. You will be given a receipt and a cab number.Just exit the airport and call for your cab. Its safer than hailing a cab outside cuz prepaid cab records are maintained and they generally wont take you for a ride.

Renting a self drive is not popular in delhi and if you havnt already driven in the city , its not recommended. After you clear customs , you will also see many private taxi booths. These are usually for long distance and outstation travel. They generally charge for a minimum of 8 hours.

About security .... umm just follow the usual guidelines . They are universal. Dont flash jewellery or bundles of money. Hold on to your luggage . Dont be fooled by taxi drivers telling you that your hotel's closed down or that there's a strike in the city so he's gonna take you to an alternate address. DO NOT accept food or drink from anyone .Always lock your valuables and bags when you leave your hotel room . Just be aware of your surroundings and enjoy your trip.

There are rent-a-car companies like hertz in Delhi but can work out to be very expensive (when compared to taxis in India).

Better to go in a pre-paid taxi as said above.

Thanks for all your input guys.

I have not decided on the hotel yet, that's why I asked if there is any other transport option, just in case the hotel doesn't offer airport pickup.

I'm sure I'll enjoy myself there!

by Mahieu about Malhotra Restaurant

Situated in Paharganj, a side street from the Main Bazaar, this is a very nice place with good food. Since Paharganj is a backpackers area, you’ll find mainly tourists here, but nevertheless the quality of the food is ok. You can go for Indian, Chinese, and even cheese macaroni or mashed potatoes, in case you’re homesick. As a sidedish I really liked the garlic nan.

Diwan-I-Am - The Hall of Public Audience

by DaDrifter

Diwan-I-Am is a large decorated pavilion that was used by the Mughal Emperor as a hall for giving public audience. It is also believed that celebrations on the innaugration of the fort took place here. The hall is divided into 27 square bays, by columns which support the arches. The ceilings and columns were originally painted with gold.

In the middle of the hall lies an ornate throne-balcony, which used to be seperated from the courtiers by a gold plated railing. This highly decorated throne balcony is made of white marble, and is carved and inlayed with precious stones.
