Hi,
The Amritsar - Lahore bus started a few months back is a big flop due the visa constraints for Indians and Pakistanis. The bus has only a few passengers on-board so you'll be able to get the ticket easily when you reach here.
If you want to avoid the hassle of the so-called bus, you can always take a taxi to Wagha Border from Amritsar, cross the border and then take another taxi to Lahore.
In Amritsar, you can stay at Hotel Golden Tower which is just a few meters away from the Golden Temple. Visit www.hotelgoldentemple.com . You can also check Mrs. Bhandari Guest House, Ranjit's Svaasa (www.svaasa.com), Hotel Ritz Plaza, Hotel Mohan International.
Do let me know if you want any more info.... When are you planning to come to Amritsar?
thanks fr replying to my query. thats a pity about the visa constraints. would i myself need a visa? i think so.apart from that is there anything wrong with the bus? and how much is a ticket? how much are taxis? in ausralia taxis are extremely expensive and u wouldnt use one for long trips.
i hope to come in september.

You will require a Pakistani Visa to enter Pakistan from India (or for this fact from anywhere. Paskistan does not give visa on arrival). There is as such no problem with the bus. Its clean, safe and comfortable. The Journey from Amritsar to Lahore is just 60 KMs but takes lot of time in immigration and checks. The bus is also scanned on both sides. The fare is about Rs. 600/- (US$ 13).
On the other hand taxi will be about Rs. 400 from Amritsar to Wagha Border. I'm not sure what they charge on other side of the border but it should not be more than this.
Hope this helps...
thanks so much for the wonderful information re the bus

Hi guys,
I am from Germany and will be travelling very soon for a couple of days to Amritsar. Would be most grateful if you could me advise on what places to see there and what are good hotels to stay in. Oh, yes, and fine Indian meal as well!
Look forward to hearing from you very soon. Please help me out!!
Cheers!
I was in Amritsar recently and stayed at the Mohan International which offered very decent accomodation. I think i paid Rs. 3,000 a night for a double. Other good options are Ritz Plaza and the hotel right next to Mohan Int. I forget the name. You should visit the Golden Temple of course and the Wagah border. There are quite a few eateries in Lawrence road and close th temple. Ask any local.
Cheers
