You might want to google and check for homestay options, some families let out their upper floor and also offer BB. These are far economical and very safe.

Hi
We visit Delhi frequently, and have always stayed in south area. I can absolutely recommend any of the three places we have stayed in- but particuarly this one http://www.lutyensbungalow.co.in/
(Booking is essential)
For more information-and photos- you can read about themon my New Delhi page.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
If budget is not a problem, then Hayatt Regency (5 star) in Bhikaji Cama Place is the best option for u. Hauz Khas is just 3 KM from there.

Travel Tips for New Delhi
Namaste jee
by ukirsari
Say "namaste jee" [just like hello in English] before start a conversation will be cool. Put both of your palms close to chest and added with a smile. Then listening their explaination and say "haan jee" sometimes. I found, learning Hindi is pretty interesting. And more friendly in conversation if you know several Hindi's words.

Getting around in Delhi
by glendesilva
New Delhi is a great place to visit in India (Not in May or June though) its pretty HOT!!!
I was their last year and was there only for 2 day and wanted to see most of delhi in a day. The best choice is to hire a private taxi (ask your hotel most of them even the budget ones have taxi services) it cost you only around Rs650 - 750 for the whole day. (USD15), which is great. Take a map, mark all the places you want to see and then just hop on and hop out. Dont waste you time trying to use any public trasports. It will spoil your trip. (But also negociate with thr driver for distace)
A must see in delhi is the parliment area, india gate, lotus temple, once you collect your travel MAp from the Airport. You will have it all!
Be careful with the 3 wheelers (Tuk tuk) also great place to shop connought place. BARAGIN, BARGAIN AND BARGAIN.
Parliament House
by Applelyn
Parliament House, earlier known as the Circular House, was built after the Montagu-Chelmsford reforms of 1919 and has become indispensable to modern Indian democracy came up as an afterthought. Sir Herbert Baker designed this edifice that resembles a Spanish bull-ring, lying like a mill-wheel dropped accidentally on its side. The three semi-circular areas were previously designed for the Chamber of Princes, the Council of State and the Legislative Assembly. However, now, they house the chambers of the Lok Sabha (House of the People), Rajya Sabha (Upper House) and the library. No one can enter into the Parliament without getting special permission from the officials.
Isa Khan's Tomb octagonal building
by ukirsari
Isa Khan's Tomb is an octagonal building. Pretty beautiful even the place seems to be forgotten [compared with Humayun’s Tomb itself]. The most I like is the details on the facade and the roofs which looks truely old but still colorful.
* Entrance fee: Indian Rs10 and Pathkar [non-Indian] Rs250, including visit to Humayun's Tomb
