Getting around.
You definitely connect with New Delhi more closely from a tuk tuk rickshaw. Isolated in the back of a taxi cab you miss quite a lot. I would most certainly agree a price BEFORE you start off on your journey. You can easily get ripped off by taxi drivers charging $34 for a short trip when the going rate is around $2-3. For a tuk tuk is about 7 pence. I do agree, though, that a decent tip at the end of the trip is a good thing.
I found New Delhi very safe and walked around quite happily looking in shops and things. However, taxi drivers will constantly accost you and try and charge huge fees as above.
They know the drill and will take you to the usual tourist places. I would avoid the Emporiums, as the driver gets a fee for taking you there. The idea is that you buy things for quite expensive prices. Good for business.
I would wander around and get the feel of the place. If you get lost, just hail a tuk tuk and they will take you back to the hotel. Don't be worried about the several near misses that your tuk tuk driver will have. How on earth the traffic system works without major pile ups is beyond me. However, your driver knows what he is doing.
It is very noisy on the street as everyone uses their horn even before they have started off from the traffic lights. The air quality is not terrific and you can get quite a sore throat from all the dust and pollution. Have some throat lozenges or wear a mask.
If you get hungy, the driver will know where a good restaurant will be. Chicken is around £3.00 but do try the vegetarian dishes. Superb.
