Mahatma Gandhi Statue
by Donna_in_India
Located on the Promenade this statue of Mahatma Gandhi was built by sculptor Roy Choudhary. It is surrounded by eight exquisitely carved monolithic granite 17th century pillars that were brought from Gingee - a fort about 70 kms from Pondicherry - after the capture of the fort.
The statue of Gandhi stands 13 feet high. The entire structure is at least twice that high and is one of the nicest monuments of Gandhi I have seen. It is especially striking when you see the statue and pillars from a distance.
Promenade
by zuyao
Take a stroll down the Promenade and you would enjoy a beautiful seaside scenery. The French buildings along this stretch are also a nice view. Along the way you would pass by the Statue of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
Notre Dame des Agnes
by Willettsworld
Known locally in Tamil as "kaps kovil" or the church of the Capuchins, this is the fourth church to be built in 1855. The first one didn't survive for very long; the second one was destroyed by the British in 1761; the third one still exists 50 metres to the south-west across the street. This church boasts a rare oil painting of Our Lady of the Assumption which was a gift from Napoleon III.
Walk Along The Promenade
by Donna_in_India
The "Promenade" runs for 1.5 km along Goubert Avenue (Beach Road) overlooking the Bay of Bengal. At the far southern end is a small children's park. Continuing north you will pass several statues (Gandhi), monuments (French War Memorial), heritage buildings (Mairie), even the old lighthouse.
The Bay is clean and mostly blue, although huge rocks prevent you from reaching the water (no swimming). Most of the time it is too hot to walk during the day but the Promenade really comes to life at night. Hawkers set up stalls of snack foods. Other hawkers sell pinwheels and neon-lit toys. Families, couples, and tourists all come out to walk.
It is a perfect spot to watch the sun set!
