More about Club Mahindra Varca Beach
This is the first time I am writing any blog on a resort (though I considered writing it after each and every trip to :-))..and I hope it is useful :-)
Me and my husband went to Goa for a 4-day holiday (Sept 29 2007 to Oct 2 2007). We are members of Club Mahindra. After having a splendid holiday at Club Mahindra Munnar, we were really looking forward to their Goa resort which is another gold crown resort.
Booking process was seamless and we got a studio booked for us very conveniently for the desired dates.
We were told the check-in time as 2pm. We reached the resort by 12:30pm. And to our disappointment, the first impression was pathetic. We were told to wait in the reception lobby and in the hot and humid weather of goa there was no fan in that area (It was not an AC area because of open air interiors.)... Anyways, we waited there and no one even asked for a glass of water. Finally after waiting for half an hour we asked them to serve us water at least.
Later on we gave them the feedback that waiting for a room was not a problem, if they would have taken some pains to provide at least fan/AC sitting area with drinking water arrangements. After traveling for 14hrs, it was a big torture to us. It seems drinking water was there, but the staff was too busy to serve that.
Anyways, we got our room at 2pm. It was a nice studio room which ended our frustrations instantly. Room was nicely done. It had a small but nice balcony. Kitchenette had microwave , kettle and refrigerator. Resort was very well maintained. Ambience was very pleasant and it had good swimming pools. They had a small but nice gym (with some weird timings like 8am-8pm though :-)). Another big positive was that Varca beach was hardly 5mts walk from the resort. It was kind of private beach.
When we went there, it was the end of monsoon season, so no shacks on the beach.. But the beach was really nice and not very crowded at that time.
There were some good evening activities arranged by hotel (like goan dances, music, party games, chaat etc) which you can enjoy if you manage to come back early to resort. Some of it was good fun.
Food was not great though (especially the buffet, I found a-la-carte better)
Another problem was getting taxis there. There was a taxi union outside Club Mahindra and when we called reception to book a taxi, they plainly said – “We do not take any bookings for taxis. There is a taxi union outside. You can go and talk to them.” The taxis outside were undoubtedly very expensive because of taxi-union there and they were not ready to give cars for self-drive. Luckily, there was a bike-rental a few meters ahead of hotel from where we could rent a bike. But there was little cooperation from hotel in this regard.
So, overall, Club Mahindra Varca was okayish experience for us. But we had more expectations after experiencing great hospitality at Club Mahindra Munnar. And staff service was really disappointing in Goa resort..
good access to Varca beach
green surroundings around the resort
activities arranged by the resort in the evening
buffet should be made better (veg)
resort should have some tie-ups with taxi union for hotel guests.
the promptness which was shown in delivering the bill a day before the check-out date (without even asking for it) should be shown for check-in also.
Lovely Hotel and Fantastic Holiday
Flew with First Choice on the 17th March for two weeks at the Club Mahindra. This was my first time to Goa but 4th time for the rest of my family, who usually stay at the Royal Palms in Benaulim.
Firstly, cannot fault first choice i thought there plane was excellent and we definantly noticed the extra legroom.
The Club Mahindra is a lovely hotel set in wonderful grounds. Our rooms (number 1902, 1903 & 1907) were postioned half way between the main building and the beach which was perfect for us and we were all in the same block as requested. the rooms were absolutly massive with good air conditioning, ceiling fans and lovely big shower. Hair dryers are also provided in the rooms along with tea/coffee making and fridge for your bottled water (i only bought bottles and would not drink the bottles they provided you with) Breakfast was ok, apart form the russians taking all the fruit just as it was brought out!!
We mainly went to the beach and sat outside Glorios, but you had to get there by 10am to get a bed but there was 6 of us. Glorio's food was excellent day and night and so friendly. The next shack Glosant again had lovely people and we did sunbathe there somedays but found his food wasn't quite as good as Glorio.
The only problem we had with the hotel was the taxi's. You had to use the ones outside, they wouldn't barter on price and were much dearer than any other taxi's, but you were left with no choice. As there was 6 of us we always had to have 2 taxi's and i think the hotel/taxi's really should consider getting a bigger car/mini bus to cater for this. If ever we went out we only had a one way taxi because where ever we went we always got a tut tut or taxi to accomdate all six of us for the same price or cheaper than one of hotel taxi's. All other taxi's wouldn't come to pick you from the Club Mahindra cause they were too scared. This is the onyl fault with the Club Mahindra.
We visited Cavelossim quite a bit and found Betty's restaurant to be our absolute favorite, the food was to die for and we ate there 3 times. One time there was 13 of us and a birthday and they organised a birthday cake and sang for us it was brilliant. The dentist in Cavelossim, Dr Carvalho's was also excellent and me and my husband bought a teeth whitening kit each. My dentist at home wants to charge £300 for the same thing which we paid £60.
Overall Goa has to be one of my favorite holidays and i will definately be going back.
Next time i'll stay in Cavelossim purely because of the taxi situation at the Club Mahindra because in Cavelossim you can get any taxi.
Hope this all helps anyone
Just got back from a 3 week holiday at the Mahindra. The room we had was really nice and very spacious..and the grounds of the hotel were beautiful, but the food there wasn't anything special really..and it was expensive. Go out the back of the hotel and you come to Varca beach..and to your right there are 3 beach shacks..the first one you come to is called Glorio's..we ate there once..and were not very impressed with the food..so the next day we tried the next shack along called Glosant..the food there was excellent and the staff were really nice and helpful. If you go there ask for Raj..he looked after us the whole holiday and he was really helpful. We then ate at Glosant most nights and had no problems with the food at all..it was always spot on. They also had a party night at the Glosant which was on a Tuesday..which was really good as well. The owner of the Glosant is called Vipin and he is a really helpful lovely guy.
This was our 3rd time in Goa, and we had such a good time in Varca that we couldn't wait to come back again..so we are coming again in November for 2 months.

What an amazing holiday. Goa was out of this world. The hotel was excellent, staff 110%. We had our own cleaner Joba he was really good, sorry our room was such a mess, but we left him a hefty tip at the end of holiday. Food in the hotel was also very good, we was bed and breakfast and the snack bar was a little expensive but still very cheap to what you would pay at home.
There are only a few places to eat just outside the hotel, but the taxis are so cheap, and they wait for you till you are ready to go back to hotel. We went upto Baga one day which was about an hour and half journey the taxi man waited then brought us back at the end of the day for about £8.00. The hotel grounds where spot on lovely pool and the beach well what can I say, there was no-one on apart from my two friends and me, total paradise. I would totally recommend this hotel, especially if you are looking for complete relaxation.
Good standard, but bland
We travel to Goa frequently - with young children and have never had a problem, but I can appreciate the gentlemens comments about the standard of hygeine etc. I suppose the nessage is, its usually OK, but can not be guaranteed.
Also, hear you about the Monarch complaints!! arent they a pain, always late, and aircraft not fit for a 3 hour flight let alone 11. Dont bother upgarding, we've never got the Premier Class home as the plane has always been late and changed for one without this cabin facility.
Anyway, this hotel is OK. Breakfast buffet reasonable, room size fairly large and grounds pleasant. They lead to the beach which is a bonus and there are a few restaurants on the beach in walking distance and out the front in walking distance. Not as many as in other areas though.
Loved the beachfront!
I just came back from a trip to Goa and stayed at Club Mahindra. The hotel is good and well-spread out and has a host of activities to do. We had a one-bedroom apartment to ourselves and the room was huge! :) The best part about it - the short walk through the hotel to the beach front and the clean beach! The hotel is well-maintained and the lawns are super! The room is clean and tastefully done. For food, I would recommend trying out the shacks close-by as we did (our favourite is the Sun-n-Moon located next door; it has some authentic Goan food and the pancakes they serve for dessert are a cool surprise!) If you love some adventure, hire a bike (also available next door) and traipse through the town - trust me, it's definitely a better way to enjoy this city of sun, sand and (yum) seafood! Everything about the resort and location are fine, the only hitch being, the staff doesn't smile much :( That was the one thing which struck me the most about this hotel. This apart, it's a cool resort and definitely worth staying in for a holiday!
Stayed at the resort for 6 days with three of my friends. It was monsoon season so the beach was very rough and the eateries along the beach were shut. Only had the Buffet at the resteraunt which had a reasonable spread. The service however was excellent. The rooms were cleaned and kept very tidy. Also every evening when we returned to the room there would be a different arrangement of towels on the bed representing fish, trees, flowers etc. Very nice touch.
Overall, it was a very nice experience and considering we got great rates by booking early and also taking into account that it was off-season, it was easy on the pockets as well.
Not a 5* Hotel! Mixed review!
We were dropped at the Club Mahindra by a very good driver supplied by our Travel Agent. On arrival we tried to ask him to come back the next day and take us to Panjim, his English was limited, so we asked the hotel security guard to translate. When the guard realised what we were asking for he told the driver to go and very rudely said that we had to use the hotel cars (which no doubt charged over the odds) to get where we wanted to go! Not happy at all at this point!
The room was clean yet had a lingering musty smell to it, this seemed to be coming from the corridor where it was decided it smelt of toilets. Can't complain about housekeeping though they were very very good and friendly to boot!
The walk to the beach depends on where your room is. Although it is improved by the impeccibly kept gardens and features within the hotel grounds. The beach itself is superb, the beach sellers take no as no and leave you alone fairly quickly and if you get a bed at Glorio's Beach Shack, Tony doesn't allow them to bother you, although his neighbour will!
On checking out we discovered a room tax, which the hotel tried to levy on us, we were not informed of this at check in or by our travel company. The tax is dependant on whether you are a member of the Mahindra scheme or not! Suffice to say we didn;t pay this and after signing a letter explaining all this the staff were quite happy for us not to pay it.
What can I say but "fabulous." I was a little apprehensive about going here as there were very few reviews when we booked. However, the hotel was beautiful and the newly refurbished rooms were stunning. We travelled with our two teenage sons. There was a wall mounted plasma t.v. in the spacious well air conditioned room. The room was kept lovely and clean. The bed was very comfortable. These rooms were assigned to First Choice customers so I am not sure on the condition of any of the other rooms.
As it was Christmas they really made everything lovely right down to a Christmas cake delivered to us on Christmas day. The breakfasts were very good and the service was ok. A new restaurant manager started on our 2nd day and he seemed to improve the waiters almost immediately.
We had two Gala dinners here which were very good. The buffet was the best I have ever seen. We often go on Cruises and I can honestly say the buffet here was better than that on the Queen Mary 2. The entertainment was geared towards the Indian guests, as it is a time share hotel. However, everyone was friendly and made us feel quite at home. There was a table tennis table, pool, internet, and game consoles in the Fun Zone so it did keep our lads happy for a while.
The beach was beautiful and we visited most of the shacks. Glorio's was absolute rubbish, the Dune shack which belonged to the hotel was excellent, although more expensive than the beach shacks. We ate around the pool for lunch, sometimes, and the snacks were very good. Most evenings we dined at the Sun and Moon which was just outside the hotel. This was a brilliant restaurant and would recommend it to any one.
There are two large pools, we were always at the new one which was kept immaculate. The towels were always put on our beds by the attendant who was really friendly.
The taxis were expensive, as reported, but we had to use them so we just had to pay up!!
At the end of our stay we received our bill and after checking it found it to be wrong by £400. They had charged us for the Christmas Eve Gala dinner not once but twice. As it was already paid for in our booking costs they issued us with an amended bill with no problems.
I did not think the hotel was expensive, yes more expensive than the shacks but drinks, room service, laundry and snacks were very good value and were very good.
All in all we had a superb holiday and enjoyed the hotel. I would recommend it to anyone.
Fantastic Location, absolutely beautiful
I thought the hotel was excellent. The Pools and Gardens at the hotel, and Varca beach were fantastic. Definitely a place for a relaxing beach holiday in beautiful surroundings.
Food in the hotel, apart from the Dune Bar, wasn't great. The Prawn Piri-Piri in the Dune Bar is recommended.
The food and drinks in the beach shacks (Glorias and Glosants) were excellent, and great value!
There were also a couple of good restaurants walking distance from the hotel which I would also recommend.
You can hire a taxi for the day to take you to North Goa (Markets, Capital, etc.). Worthwhile doing this.
