Friendship Guesthouse: Good river frontage
The Friendship Guesthouse is one of the newer guesthouses in Ketambe. Large, bare rooms are available for 60,000 rupiah a night and come with attached bathroom which has a bucket/plastic tub mandi and western toilet. There is a good range of food on the menu although it is not always available - when I stayed in January 2011, they ran out of nearly all fruit so no juices. While the garden is great, this guesthouse seems to be the local hangout for the young men. While initially friendly, if you don't speak Bahasa Indonesia, they tend to ignore you, and often they are quite loud.
It was also very hard to negotiate for a guide to take us into the jungle. The owner claimed that tariffs were not the same as the guide association rates because 'none of the guides in Ketambe belong to the guide assoication'. I later found out this was not true. We were required to pay for five packets of cigarettes for both the guide and for the porter for an overnight trip, along with what seemed exorbitant rates. I'd certainly suggest checking with Wisma Cinta Alam Guesthouse before booking any trek.
If you are in Ketambe to relax, this is the place to be. The garden behind the restaurant is very quiet and there is a grassed area to relax on the bank of the river Alas. Entry into the water is easy, so it is really the place for a cool dip after a hot day of trekking.

Wisma Cinta Alam Guesthouse: For the best trekking advice in Ketambe
Wisma Cinta Alam situated on the river side of the Kutacane-Blangkejeren road in Ketambe offers some cheap, clean bungalows in a beautiful garden setting. A long garden leads down to the Alas River where you can sit peacefully in the sun or relax in the cool waters. Bungalow prices are between 60,000 and 80,000 rupiah and appeared to be the best quality of all the guesthouses in Ketambe. The menu has a good range of food at very reasonable prices.
Without a doubt, Wisma Cinta Alam offers the best advice on trekking into Gunung Lesuer. Johan is a terrific guide and from all reports Wisma Cinta Alam is the guesthouse least likely to overcharge or provide 'lazy' guides. Johan can also organise rafting expeditions down the Alas River.
This family run establishment does not have the same quality dining/indoor areas as places like the Friendship Guesthouse, but even if you are not staying here, I'd recommend you talk to the family about trekking options before committing yourself to anyone else. There is a room full of maps and photos.
And certainly stop in for a meal - the food is great!

Pak Mus, Pondok Wisata, Wisma Sadar Wisata: Other acommodation in Ketambe
Apart from Friendship Guesthouse and Wisma Cinta Alam, there are several other accommodation options in Ketambe.
Wisma Sadar Wisata is on the river side which is an advantage in terms of having a relaxing garden on the riverbank. When I stayed in Ketambe in January 2012 it looked deserted - although to be honest, it wasn't tourist season.
Pak Mus Guesthouse and Pondok Wisata Ketambe are not on the river side, a disadvantage, but both have nice gardens and basically back onto the jungle so there is a chance of seeing monkeys.
A word of warning though - I had considered staying at Pak Mus but met a few tourists who had been there recently and suggested against it. Apparently service was poor but the biggest complaint was about the guides provided by the guesthouse for jungle treking. Several tourists commented that the guides were lazy and spent more time sitting and smoking than actually walking. The comment from some was that Pak Mus was once the best, but now becuase it is known and people automatically go there, the service is poor.
Another reason to find out about a range of treking options and prices before making any for of commitment
