i took a 2-3 hour bike tour while i was in bali the other year. it was cool to see the local villages and plantations. the tour started on top of a mountain, so almost the whole ride was downhill. check out my bali page if you have time:

We stayed in Ubud - an inland village.

We did venture to the tourist hotspot Kuta - but never again - unless you like being hassled by street sellers who were charging ridiculous prices anyway.

Ubud is getting a bit touristy - but there are plenty of places to escape the hustle & bustle.

Have fun

Lisa I hope the weather is good as my husband and I will be there at the same time. We stay in South Kuta because we love the bustle. I have to recomend going to Waterbom Park for the day it is great fun either floating down thelazy river or doing down the water slides. The restaurant there is very reasonably priced.
Bali is a beautiful place so anywhere is good to visit. Ubud is good for a day trip.

Ubud and Besakir are nice, especially the route from besakir back to Denpasar. The view of the two vocanoes:Gunung Agung and Gunung Batu is very beautiful. But what's so annoying is at the entrance of Besakir , they will try to force you to take a guide . They say it's not a guide but a guard of the temple. For me I didn't get any useful information from that guard at all. All he did was to ask for extra money to walk you around and donation after he asked if you wanted to pray !! So, you don't need it and just say no.

Travel Tips for Denpasar

Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia

"What a place ! .............."

First time there I fell in love with the place; soo many temples, very, very nice always smiling people, and soo cheap ! .
Later on I got to be station in the Island of Guam, 6 hrs. away, and this became "my private weekend paradise". I used to fly there for a good massage, a good meal, and some relaxation and sightseeing ! .
In 1995 I had the chance of being station there for some time and this became my home.
The beach in Kuta is where all the tourists hang up and obviously the hasle is (was) very high.
The first thing that catches your attention it's all the merchandise of all kind that you can buy there for pennies ! ....
Traveling to the country side it's finding paradise !, the rice terraces, the mountains and volcanoes, Kintamani, Bedugul, all the hindu temples, the beaches in the north coast unspoiled and great for surfing ! .....
One of my favorite places there it's to go up to Lake Bedugul and stay for a couple of days in a place in front of the lake (Griya Graha Bungalows) for about US$8.00/room. Pretty quiet and cooler than the rest of Bali, most of the times surrounded by clouds.
If temples it's what you're looking for, there are plenty of them; Tanah Lot, The temple of the "good" monkeys and the one of the "bad monkeys" (due to their behaviour obviously), etc. etc.
Still nowadays, you can buy a big beer Bintang, Anker, or Bali Hai for about a US$1.10 and a decent meal from US$0.20 to whatever you can afford, depending on the location of course ! ..... in resume, Bali is the place even after the bombimg of the Sari Club in Oct. 12, 2002 ! .
