Pretend to speak a DIFFERENT LANGUAGE! That will confuse 'em. This was our FAVORITE sport. Either out walking them and/or confusing them by speaking pretend Tongan! Fast Walking shoes and a Way Ahead Gazing look. Keep them at bay by walking fast and not paying attention to the touts... as if you don't even understand what they are saying!

surfing!

surfing is very popular in kuta.
if you don't know how, just take one of those surfing school by the beach.
but if you're more into the adventour spirit, just rent the board by the beach and ask the renting guy how to surf, it's much much cheaper than taking surfing school. sometimes you only pay for rp 50.000 for the board for the whole day.

"The Quintisential Island Paradise"

I stayed for 3 days in Kuta back in 1982, taking advantage of an optional stop over on my first flight to Australia in the company of a dear female friend from an old and distinguished British family who was on her way to visit relatives in Australia.

The first night we stayed in a bare thatched bamboo hut in a tiny and very cheap and basic "tourist village" style hotel. But this was a tad too bleak and so we moved for the second two nights to the Kuta Beach Hotel and stayed in one of a number of delightful chalets around a central stream, sitting waist deep in the cool swimming pool drinking cocktails at the water bar. There was a Balinese band in the evening and delicious food.

The beaches were snow white and the coral so sharp that one had to wear plastic sandles to walk into the water. We took a dugout taxi and sailed around the coast on glass clear water. It was paradise.
