If you love tropical gardens...

This hotel is set back from the road, private, quiet, with amazing gardens and contains about 10 individual bungalows. The bungalows are in the Balinese style, some with thatched roof, others tiled roof. Bungalows also have hot water bath or showers. We stayed in Bungalow 2 which was very comfortable and was cleaned each day. We planned to stay 2 nights and stayed for seven! We did not move from Ubud as a result of this beautiful hotel. Breakfasts were plentiful and good, cooked and served by Kadek, the owner's grandson. The owner, elderly Mr Sama was a funky dude who was always pottering around in the garden or helping renovate some of the cottages. The hotel is perched on the edge of the river and has established tropical gardens and ponds. At night, Mr Sama has placed lights throughout the gardens to charm your socks off.

There is a quiet and clean pool area which was a regular hangout in the afternoons after a hot morning's walk through the hills. The staff and owner were also really good with families with children, there were some staying there at the same time we were there. But you may need to supervise your kids around the pool and maybe the ponds.

Sama's Cottages in on Jalan Bisma, 200 metres from the centre of Ubud, but the street itself still has ricefields in sections. You can walk down Jalan Bisma and take a short cut to emerge near the Monkey Forest, so you're close to many things really. Go there to experience this place for yourself!

Some web-based hotel agents do bookings for Sama's, but you may like to contact them directly (only phone available) or just turn up.

Unique Quality: The hotel is in a great location, also very quiet, yet near to Ubud's main centre. No need to rely on 'hotel transport' or shuttles. Cut down on the amount of fuel being burnt up around Ubud's streets by avoiding these ubiquitous hotel shuttles and staying close to town.

Really good value at US$15/night. Lovely views of rice fields from the street. Great privacy as well.

Quiet cottages by the River

If you want peace and quiet, stay at Sama's Cottages. No noisy bars or pubs around yet very close to the main street and restaurants. Just enjoy the sounds of the gurgling stream and crickets to lull you to sleep ...and look out for the squirrels in the trees.

Quiet cottages by the river

Our cottage was at the very end of the resort so we were right above the river. Very peaceful, quiet and cosy. Surrounded by trees and bamboo. Basic accommodation with rustic ambiance. Might get your occasional gecko visitors in the ceiling. Rupiah130,000 a night with breakfast of egg, fruits, bread and coffee

Unique Quality: Lush green garden path, pool, private terrace, quiet. Mr Sama, the owner, is a very sweet old man, always tending his plants, cleaning his resort etc
