Ubud Hotel

by Ramonq

I'm thinking of booking a room at Hotel Tjampuhan & Spa in Ubud. Has anyone got any feedback on this place?

Hi Ramon, as no one's responded to your question, I thought I'd post a link for you to check out.

I haven't stayed at Tjampuhan, but there are a couple of reviews and photos here:

RE: Ubud Hotel

by sinter

We have stayed at Hotel Tjumpuhan 3 times.
This place is VERY nice.
The only thing that some people get put off about the place is the steps.
As it is located on the side of a river gorge, it has lots of steps to get from the various huts / villas etc, to the pool, restaurant and back up to the road.
All good for the legs !
2 pools, one is spring water fed.
Breakfast is very nice (buffet style) and they have an egg cook as well.
Rooms are a good size - if you don't mind paying a bit more, try and get the Walter Spies room.
It take about 15 min to walk into the town center, or you can ask for a ride into town. They (the hotel) provide free transport to places in Ubud.

I know you said you don't need any transport around Bali, yet just in case - please just have a look at www.baliinsighttours.com
We started a small tour company last year - all going well so far.
We only use registered guides (Puja is our main man in Bali) and our cars / vans are all licensed to carry tourists.

Have a great time.

You have talked me into it and I have just booked at Tjampuhan for 5 nights. Thanks for all your fantastic advice. Can't wait to laze around the pool amidst all that greenery.

Travel Tips for Ubud

Touching

by corsakti

In Bali it is common for men to touch eachother in very familiar ways. It is very normal to see male friends holding hands, walking down the street arm-in-arm or with their arms around eachothers shoulders. It is also commonly seen that friends often greet eachother by cupping the others genitals! This may seem surprising to many Westerners but its just a friendly hello!

In contrast, it is considered bad form for people of the opposite gender to touch eachother in loving or familiar ways such as these. Public displays of affection between male & female couples, even if married, are generally frowned upon.

Petulu Heron Roosting Area

by M0B1US

A couple of Kms north of Ubud is the Petulu Heron Sanctuary, otherwise known as the 'Village of Birds'.

It is a roosting place for thousands of Herons in the trees that line the road to the north of the village.

It is an amazing sight seeing the trees covered in their white bodies and all the more spectacular when hundreds more return at dusk and the air above is thick with flying birds...

Watch out for the bird droppings, as these are large birds the 'payload' shall we say, is larger than your average pigeon...;-)

An interesting diversion if you are exploring the area around Ubud, only really accessible by private or guided transport.

Iced Tea, Movies and Football...

by M0B1US about Do Drop Inn

Another place where we stopped off for a refreshing Iced Tea that they do so well in Bali...

A nice friendly establishment up a flight of stairs for good views of the street below from the open air balcony. There is also a water feature in the middle of the cafe from which the sound of the running water adds to the feelings of relaxation.

Do Drop Inn also shows recently released movies on a big screen TV at 8pm each night for no extra charge.

Apparently this is a lively place to watch the football at the adjacent fields and then celebrate with the rowdy winners afterwards! Again we did not eat here, but the standard would be termed as averagely priced and presented - not a bad place, but there are better ones close by.

Eating Organic at River Café

by balisunshine about Maya Ubud Hotel

If you’re particular
about eating healthy,
then maybe Maya Ubud
could be a stop for you.

Maya Ubud is a hotel,
with a beautiful spa
and it’s restaurant,
River Café has some
healthy food on it’s menu
along with other dishes for those
who eat just about anything.

Prices are a bit higher
than most other restaurants
found on the street,
but that is what
you can expect from
most higher end hotels.

Items on their menu include an assortment of:

Healthy Juices
Crunchy fresh Salads
Fresh Soups
Hot Stone Cooking
Sandwiches and grilled crusts

The restaurant overlooks the river
and the hotel swimming pool.

We were please with
the freshness of the produce.

Bali Rice Terraces

by M0B1US

A spectacle of mankind adapting to his environment, the Bali rice terraces that seemingly defy gravity are incredibly photogenic.

These terraces go back over 2,000 years when farmers armed only with primitive hand tools began carving the stepped terraces out of the contours of the steep hill sides. Generation after generation has extended and kept them in meticulous shape out of necessity as rice is the staple food.

Today's rice terrace farmers are part of a community cooperative. Each of these establishes firm regulations on a local level to ensure that the irrigation water is fairly allocated and that only so many farmers tap into the limited flowing water at the same time.

The community cooperative also makes sure that the complex irrigation system is maintained and that a farmer does not block the water from flowing downward to rice terraces below his.

Rice terrace cooperatives are a major reason why a farmer is able to get up to three crops per year from these highly fertile and productive paddies.

Unfortunately the flat fields are rapidly being swallowed up as more and more Balinese forsake their cultural past to tap into the lucrative tourist market by selling their fields to be developed into luxury hotels. Perhaps the Bali bombing may staunch this process as Balinese discover how fickle the tourist market is, and realise that they still need rice to live on...

The emerald-green rice terraces in the river gorge north of Tegallatang village in central Bali are considered to offer travelers the best photo opportunity - unfortunately they were between plantings when I was there and therefore not as spectacular as they could have been.

Other popular lush-green and well-tended Balinese rice paddy sites include those in the Ubud area and Pupuan, Jatiluwih, Tampaksiring, Tabanan and Tirtagangga.
