Dirty Duck's Diner
by M0B1US about Bebek Bengil
So how did this most beautiful and romantic of restaurants - a favourite haunt of the locals, get its name...?
"One tropical monsoon morning, when the restaurant was very close to being finished ( we had the concrete floor down, and the tables in ), a flock of ducks from the rice field across the road ( yes, there were rice fields all around us then ) ran quacking and squawking into the restaurant and across the floor and tables. They left muddy webbed footprints all over the place. They were our first guests - those dirty ducks!"
Perhaps one of the most satisfying things when on holiday is discovering a fantastic restaurant that isn't even in the guide books!
Dirty Duck's is just such a place and just a few hundred yards from our hotel - such was the greatness of this place in all aspects that despite the plethora of mouthwatering restaurants all crying out to be sampled in Ubud, we simply had to eat here more than once!!!
Firstly it exudes characteristic Balinese charm in that it is an open air temple to food with several dining areas connected to a number of intimate private tables sheltered under their own individual thatched canopies.
Secondly the views are to die for as it is about the only place in the centre of Ubud that has unbroken views of rice paddies as your vista - they own them so despite the rampant developments surrounding the restaurant, this view is guaranteed (as well as being a source of the restaurant's rice!)...
Thirdly the staff are wonderfully friendly and the service is impeccable to a tee - right down to the umbrellas they carry to cover the food when it rains.
We came twice, once during a very rainy and highly enjoyable day - and once for an unforgettable night during a power cut, which only added to the romance of the evening when the candles came out... Dining alfresco here is a wonderful experience and both times we had our own exclusive little table to while away our fantastic meals...
The menu is very eclectic with a lot of european dishes on offer - but of course we were going 'native'... ;-)
As well as the wonderful starters we had mains such as the ubiquitous Nasi Campur and Nasi Goreng, which were the best we tasted on the island! Our favourite drink was another Balinese favourite - the Iced Tea...
Other drinks included the local Indonesian firewater, Arak.
Come here!! You will NOT be disappointed! :-)

Spa at ZEN
by Icewine
A trip to Ubud is not complete w/o pampering yourselves at Zen on Jalan Hanoman (get the flyer at Bali Pesto). You can get a 1 hour 20min massage, body scrub, yogurt rub and flower petal bath for 90,000rp (US$9.5) in very nice setting.
Very neat and soothing environment - they could be booked up real fast.
Doing the art scene
by Restless-in-kl
On this trip to Ubud, we decided to focus on art instead of just shopping on Jl Monkey Forest. Having our own car helps as we can choose where to go and when to stop.
Finally saw egg painters at work and visited a few galleries where my friend bought many paintings. We learned about the different styles of art/strokes too.
