A very different resort

I discovered Waka di Ume via a travel agent at the very last minute ie. the night before leaving for Ubud. With so many hotels/accommodation in Ubud, I was getting confused and did not know which to go for.

As my friend and I have a self-drive rented car, we decided to stay a little farther away from Ubud town center and thought Waka di Ume was perfect.

Waka di Ume is an oasis of quiet and serenity. With our car, it's only 10 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Ubud. We stayed in one of the free standing Lanai room facing lush, green paddy terraces. There are 16 individualistic and distinctive dwelling units, scattered down the gentle flanked by rice fields.

Our room is big. It comes with a king size bed with lovely mosquito nettings, big plush floor cushions around a small coffee table looking out to the view outside and a wonderful bathroom equipped with a sunken bath tub, a separate shower over pebbled floor and skylights that allow the sun to come in and play.

Service is impeccable. Everything that you need is attended to quickly and always with a smile. Its gardens are beautiful and its buildings are very much part of its surroundings. Everywhere at Waka di Ume, you are surrounded by the textures and colour of nature, dressed slate, tiles, smooth unpainted wood, soft homespun fabrics; intricate worked copper; fragrant alang alang grass fooling, natural bamboo, rough cut stone, flowers and foliage. Nothing is intrusive.

This is a place to relax, to luxuriate, to escape the rush and noise of the outside world and to immerse yourself in quiet and comfort. So take your time, slow down and enjoy life!

A picture speaks a thousand words, so check out the Waka di Ume travelogue and watch the story unfolds before your eyes.

Unique Quality: To me, the whole place is outstanding. My favourites are

- morning breakfasts are such a joy. Our room comes with a sit down breakfast in the restaurant overlooking rice fields. We get bread basket, fruit platter, fresh fruit juice and fried rice or fried noodles. Servings here are generous

- spa here is spectacular. Set in a 3-storey open concept building, the spa has 2 treatment rooms, a manicure/pedicure/salon area that overlooks beautiful scenery and an outdoor hot tub (must be booked for private use of each room). We took the treatment room that comes with a big tub and is open to the gorge and rice fields. Please see Spas of Asia for more info and the Waka di Ume travelogue for pictures

For US$120 a night, we stayed for 4 days/3 nights and received daily breakfast for 2, spa massage for 2 and return airport transfers.

Retreat in the Rice Fields

by Rodan44 about Waka di Ume

Waka di Ume is a boutique resort surrounded by rice fields, just a few minutes outside Ubud. Some of the larger suites have private pools, but my wife and I stayed in the small but lovely Papaya Villa, with an elegant tented king-size bed and exotic outdoor bathroom. The staff were incredibly helpful, even going so far to get us some food from town after our late arrival because the hotel restaurant had already closed. Definitely one of the most romantic and relaxing places we have ever been. Quiet and intimate, with only 16 rooms, and has a wonderful pool overlooking the terraced rice slopes. Perfect for a romantic getaway. They also offer free shuttle service to and from Ubud, although it's also possible to walk there.

Heavenly Place surrounded by rice paddies, Ubud

by trisanna about Waka Di Ume

We came here for my husband's birthday. I was impressed with this place. If you want a romantic hotel on the outskirts of Ubud-you may want to consider this place. It's a small hotel in the middle of rice paddies. There are a few standard rooms, located in duplexes. Otherwise, all the other rooms are in villas-they even have a few pool villas. We had the Papaya villa-which was wonderful. Lovely bed and great outdoor bathroom.

In the afternoon, they have a complimentary tea service above the restaurant.

A nice two level pool. The staff are great at this hotel. When we arrived -it was late at night and we didn't have dinner. They went out of their way and got us some hawker (street food). That was so good. We didn't tell them it was my husband's birthday-but they found out when writing our information down from our passports. When we came home one night there was a birthday cake in our room for him.

The food is great at this hotel. The breakfasts are very nice. You can have the Indonesian or American breakfast. Dinners there are also very nice. The isolated location is quite nice. If you walk to downtown Ubud (monkey forrest road) -it's about 30 minutes. They have a complientary shuttle that will drop you off and pick up).If you call them from town, they will pick you up and transport is so easy to arrange to the hotel. I truly recommend this hotel.

Waka di Ume - a very different resort

"The front entrance"

We missed it when we first arrived as it's very discreet!

"Our Lanai room"

"Inside our room"

This is a very comfy bed and the ambience in the room is quite romantic

"Our bathroom"

Love the sun streaming into the bathroom

"Resort next to rice fields"

These villas have the best view. If only we can afford it!

"I call her Lady of the Waka"

This lovely pond is right in front of the family villa. Waka di Ume gardens are intimate and beautiful.

"Waka's pool"

With so much to see and do in Ubud, we were hard pressed to find time to spend at the pool. When we did, it was very serene. All you hear is the sounds of the gushing river at the bottom of the gorge (you can see when you look down from pool area), the rustling wind and music from the forest.

"The spa"

This is my favourite spot in the spa. Soaking in this tub and looking out to the rice fields, gorge and jungle.
