Hotel Pelangi Indah: Budget near Tawang station

Hotel Pelangi Indah is close to Tawang Railway Station, convenient for those doing Java by train. No stars, but a good budget or backpacker option. Room prices vary from Rp 85,000 to Rp 215,000 (October 2012).

We walked in when roaming the old town, and a receptionist showed us around although we did not intend to stay. He was proud of his historic building, which in colonial times served as office of the internal revenue authority. One showpiece is an empty vault with heavy iron door that cannot be closed shut anymore. The staircase with granite steps and the floor tiles are all original.
From the balcony on the upper floor one has a nice view on Tawang Station (and on the ruins of a neighbouring building inhabited by young squatters).

Semesta Heritage Hotel: A friendly sharia hotel

For a couple of days discovering downtown Semarang we chose Semesta Hotel, because of its proximity to the Chinese quarter (Pecinan). It was only recently established, a group of muslim entrepeneurs renovated two ancient buildings, which now serve as meeting room and ball room, and had a five storey hotel block built behind them. The meeting room features Chinese ceramic tiles, the ball room (do they really dance here?) is of European style.

Our Superior room was spacious, the bathroom tiny. They might have built the latter somewhat bigger at the cost of the former. When we remarked that the room was not quite clean, it was spic and span the next day. As walk-in guests we paid Rp 330,000; book through Agoda for the best price.

The hotel seemed quite popular among locals; some meeting going on in the convention hall every evening.

Only drawback in hot Semarang: no swimming pool. If you should want a pool, head for Quest Hotel around the corner, slightly more expensive with glass-and-chrome facade.

The buffet breakfast was exceptional because of the great variety of food to choose from. One can even get traditional herbal drinks (jamu) free of charge all day. That compensates for the fact that alcoholic drinks are taboo.
