Nice Hotel to Stay
I have enjoyed myself very much during my stay at Novotel Solo. The staff there are very friendly and the services they provide are good. Although there are not much of facilities, like the swimming pool is not really posh, but still can usable and nice. So I will recommend that any travellers check out novotel solo when they go visiting Solo in Central Java.
Unique Quality: The staff are very friendly and kind. They have a high service quality standard. You can find a nice restaurant in the hotel too. They serve nice food.

Solo city
I know this hotel since a long time ago now, as coming quiet often in Solo for business. Well situated (town centre), no headache for transport from airport the shuttle bus is free with the hotel booking, just need to state my flight number and I have the car already waiting me at the airport. rooms are ok, clean and maintain, the food at the restaurant is very good, big range of dishes on the menu (Indonesian, asian and western), big plus is the breakfast, you really have what you pay for. staff warm and cheersfull, WIFI is available in all the hotel no broadband. In conclusion, a good hotel with high standard compare to the other hotels in Solo.... I advise you to try the Novotel Solo
Unique Quality: For sure, there are 2 + for this hotel, the location in the middle of the town centre (hotel is quiet even the location) and the big Spa-fitness centre of the hotel, which was free during my stay. I could enjoy everything jacuzzi, steam room, fitness floor, ....

Cater more for business travellers
I stayed here for one night on Dec 19, must say Grand Mercure Phoenix Hotel in Jogja is better(both belongs to Accor Group). Although the room is bigger but furnishing is not as artistic as her sister hotel.
The hotel staffs are not well trained as they don't know how much airport tax is for International travellers. Don't change your US$ here as the rate is really exorbitant!
There are not many hotels in Solo so I would recommend to those if they don't mind staying in a business hotel. It is about 20 mins to Solo Airport.
Unique Quality: Nothing unique

The Best Hotel in Town
Of all the hotels I checked out while I was here, Novotel seems to be the best hotel with a decent spa, pool and international standards of service. The rest seem a little run down. The rates are pretty reasonable and ranges from USD40-60.

Solo's most centrally located hotel
The Novotel Solo is part of the Accor hotel chain from France and the only international standard hotel that is located on Solo's main thoroughfare Jalan Slamet Riyadi. A stone's throw away from Solo's major attractions (The Sultanate, Batik markets, and other traditional markets), shopping and eating venues in Jalan Slamet Riyadi is also within walking distance.
When we stayed there, the staff were really friendly and tried to meet our needs and always with impeccable Javanese hospitality. The rooms were spacious and very modern and as a nice touch, the hotel provided a mineral water dispenser just right next to the elevator on each floor. So you won't never go thirsty in this hotel :). There are one restaurant (which serves lovely buffet breakfast including traditional cuisines) and a bar, which is frequented by Solo's expats during weekend nights. There's is also a tropically designed swimming pool area.
I was really satisfied with my stay in the Novotel Solo and would definitely stay here again when I return to this city!
Unique Quality: - The only international standard hotel on Jalan Slamet Riyadi
- Close to major attractions
- Impeccable service from staff, with Javanese hospitality
- Water dispensers on every floor!

Some questions about Solo
Next week I will be arriving in Solo with an Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur. Some questions about Solo:
1. How far is the airport from the center (near the Kraton) and how much is a taxi from the airport to the center? Are there fixed prices for airporttaxis, or do they have meters?
2. Suggestions for a good budget hotel in or close (walking distance) to the center (about 10-15 USD, clean and airco)?
3. Is the Kraton worth visiting (I will also go to Yogyakarta)? Other interesting things near the center?
4. What's the easiest way to travel from the center of Solo to the center (Sosrowijayan or Prawirotaman area) of Yogyakarta? Train or bus? How much will this cost?
Thanks answering,
Harry
Re: Some questions about Solo
The Solo (or Sulakarta) airport is not very far (just 10 KMS) from the City. At the airport, you will find a counter (Taksi Angkara counter) for Pre-paid taxi and they will charge you less than USD 10 for a ride to city. There are no meters in these taxis.
There are a range of accomodatrion options in Solo, ranging from USD 15- USD 200. Hotel Shahid Raya Hotel Solo (+62271-644144,645889,fax +62271 644133.)is a good and reasonable hotel in the city. Rates are USD 15 per day. If you are willing to spend around USD 40-50, Novotel Hotel (Jalan Slamet Ryadi phone: +62271-724555,Fax +62271-724666)can be an excellant option.
If you also plan to visit Kraton in Yogyakarta, I will say to visit the Krarton in Yogyakarta.
The best way to visit Yogyakarta from centre of Solo is to take a train. Yogyakarta is 65 KMs from Solo and very good train options are available. There are numerous trains between the 2 cities, starting from 5 A.M. But the station in Yogyakarta is not very close from the Prawirotaman area. You will have to take a Manual Rickshaw (Becak, pronounced as BeChak)or a taxi. It is around 5 KMs from there.
The train ticket from Solo to Yogyajkarta will be around USD 1
Yogyakarta is a beautiful place and old architectural style of Java is predominantly evident in this city.
Enjoy your trip

Re: Some questions about Solo
Hi Harry,
While in Solo, why dont you visit Pasar Klewer, not far from Keraton. You will see Javanese market life, and try some local snack like cenil (made from glutinous rice flour, taste sweet), grontol (made from corn, salty-sweet), and intip (burnt dry rice, taste salty and sweet).
Sosrowijayan is not far from Yogyakarta Train Station, approx. 400 m. You can find budget hotel too at Sosromenduran, which only 100 m from train station.
Have a happy trip!
Some questions about Solo
If you want to be more flexible Solo-Yogyakarta, there are plenty of Aircon Bus
or you can take travel (minibus) & they will take you to destination in Yogyakarta
Have a nice trip,
