    Pre-war ambiance

    by

Solo is a historic city to be experienced from a historic hotel. Roemahkoe Heritage Hotel offers an autentic pre-war ambience.
The compound was originally built in 1938 as a family residence by a Javanese batik merchant.

There are only 14 rooms in Roemahkoe. All come with AC, hot and cold water and TV. From January 2010 all rooms have international TV channels and the bedding has been renewed. Only drawback: not much daylight in the rooms.

Solo being close to Salatiga, we did not stay here, but we do enjoyed the Solo Specialties in the Laras restaurant (open 7 am to 10 pm).

Room rates including breakfast but excluding 21% service and tax (January 2010):
Deluxe ((11 rooms) Rp 475,000, Junior Suite (1 room) Rp 540,000, Royal Suite (2 rooms) Rp 815,000.

Unique Quality: Full of authentic furniture and Art Deco decoration. Located near Lawean Batik Village where you can observe this traditional art and try your hand at it.

Directions: Jalan dr Rajiman is the long road leading west from Pasar Klewer. Roemahkoe is near the western end, perhaps 2 km from the market. If you come from Kartasura, turn right at the statue immediately after crossing the railway.

    ROEMAHKOE

    by

Roemahkoe is a bed & breakfast in the heart of Solo, Central Java. Originally a large private house, the now Javanese owners have opened this original dutch art deco villa up to the public.

Offering 12 or more guest bedrooms, traditional javanese breakfast and local fresh roasted coffee, this museum/hotel and homage to the bygone art deco era is a must see stop on your stay in the Solo area. The original furniture and decor are the real deal, authentic and untouched for almost 90 years.

Unique Quality: Its an interesting and unique way to step back in time - dutch art deco in central Java - but it is a big slice of history & culmination of the spice-route trade. Rooms are spacious but simple. A teak fourposter canope bed, ultra high ceilings and an exquisite stainedglass art deco bedside lamp more than made the room acceptable. Have a drink or a coffee in one of the many sittingroom areas and slip back in time.

    OLD JAVANESE ARCHITECTURE

    by

This is a lovely old place that was built in 1938. It features old Javanese architecture and antique ornaments.
There are only 13 rooms. 10 deluxe (we stayed in one of these), 2 royal suites and 1 junior suite.

Lots of history about the origins and life of this place can be found in their reading room.

We had dinner in the restaurant simply because we were exhausted after all the sightseeing we had done on our way across from Borobudur. The meal was nothing to rave about, maybe it was what we ordered. Breakfast the next morning was ok too.

We only stayed one night but what we saw we liked.

Travel Tips for Solo

Candi Sukuh

by trisanna

Located one hour or so outside of Solo. This is one of the most beautiful and unique temples in Java. It almost resembles one of the Mayan temples-with the flat top and outdoor stairs. Built in the 15th century during the end of the Majapahit empire. The carvings are more comical and crude than the fine work at Borobudur or Prambanan. This is considered a fertility shrine, since there is a lot of sexual imagery.

Triwindu Antique Market

by chrisvandenbroucke

Two different parts on this market.
The most boring is the half where the sell motor and motorbike accessories and parts.

But there's also a relatively small antique market with very tiny shops where you have to be carefyl not to break anything.
The sellers (mostly women) know their prices but they have good quality pieces for very reasonable prices.

I also saw there one of the most touristy Belgian attractions: our 'Manneken Pis", a little boy who stands on the Brussels Grand Market peeing....
