Once the royal accomommodation

The **** Kusuma Sahid Prince Hotel, built in 1976 on the royal estate of Prince Kusumo Yudho, the son of Susuhunan Pakubuwono X, retains the traditional architecture and noble glory of Javanese culture and history.

This tip-top hotel is luxury, fresh, smiling faces bid you "Slamat Datang" into the gracious lobby, the original Pendopo Agung, the Prince's courtroom. Nightly, soft gamelan music played in the heart of this simple yet majestic complex provides exotic entertainment for your stay ...

Unique Quality: There is the well-known Olympic-size pool, great tropical garden, and each guestroom meets international standars complete with a/c, color tv and in-house video programs, refrigerator, radio, telephone extensions in the bedroom and bathroom, 24-hour answering service, same-day laundry, dry cleaning, "around-the-clock" room service for your meals, snacks and drinks, and ... a great gallery in front of the hotel.

We got the "Indraloka Royal Suite", ie. the green MAWAR Suite!!! There was an over-booking, and we were allowed to stay in the beautiful MAWAR Suite ... fabulous!

Tired Old Grand Dame

Stayed one night at Sahid Kusuma and thankfully not a day longer. Apparently cited as "one of the most stylish places to stay" in Solo by one of the well known guide books and apparently a former palace of one of the royal family members - those were my main reasons for booking rather than stay in a generic chain hotel for a change. However twas a huge disappointment after the Grand Mercure in Yogya (beautiful and recommended for ambience). Must say the palaces in Solo themselves probably had seen better days so should not have expected much.

The Great hall (pendopo) which probably was the main hotel reception was under renovation works (not mentioned in any websites) so again disappointed after hearing so much about it.
Intially given a cabana room next to the pool - room was tired, damp stains on the wall and beetle in the bath; definitely seen better days; managed to get room changed to what was a "mini" suite which was marginally better, though water was not hot (luke warm); mosquitoes and a smell from towels. Just couldn't wait to get away. Breakfast was ok - buffet style with enough choice to suit most tastes.
Overall would not recommend it for the price - could have stayed at a boring chain hotel for the same price (USD 42 incl breakfast).
