Guest House Ijen Heritage: Our favourite
Guest House Ijen Heritage is located on Jalan Ijen, arguably the most upmarket residential street in Malang centre. Passing by we spotted the guesthouse and when we asked for a look at the rooms it turned out that we had already met the manager at Villa Wonorejo. The same company (PATA Perum Jasa Tirta I) that manages the latter, had opened Ijen Heritage since January 1, 2010.
So we got a favourable rate on a VIP colonial room and moved in here for our remaining days in Malang.
The guesthouse is situated in a renovated house dating from Dutch colonial time, as there are many along Ijen Street. The VIP rooms are in the main building, the standard rooms have been added, and the former servants quarters house the kitchen and service rooms.
Rates (April 2010, including tax and service):
VIP colonial room: Rp 550,000.
Standard room: Rp 275,000.
Unique Quality: The VIP rooms come with welcome drink and daily fruit basket, hot and cold shower; the bathroom was outfitted too soberly though. The standard rooms with welcome drink and cold shower only. All rooms have AC and TV, prices include a well-made breakfast, WIFI is available. We liked to sit with our laptop in the restaurant area in the back yard.
The guesthouse was so new that they had no menu card yet. But the cook was happy to prepare our dishes of choice on order. Price examples: Krengsengan Rp 29,645, Ca Kailan Rp 11.495, White Rice Rp 4840, Pisang Goreng Keju Rp 14,520 (all including 21 % tax and service).

Enny's Guesthouse: A popular guesthouse
Enny's Guesthouse was recommended by an Indonesian friend. It turned out to be a somewhat labyrinthine establishment on three levels, the lower one below street level. The Dutch speaking owner, mrs Enny, developed her guesthouse since the demise of her husband 20 years ago.
We had the choice of AC rooms on the street side and a bamboo AC room overlooking the roof garden. We chose the latter for the garden view, unfortunately our sleep was disturbed by prayers from a mosque and bats flying in and out.
The service was friendly enough, with European breakfast and unlimited self-service coffee and tea. Free WIFI available.
Rates (April 2010, inclusive):
Standard (fan and TV): Rp 184,000
Bamboo (fan and TV): Rp 241,500
Deluxe (AC and TV): Rp 276,000 (bamboo) up to Rp 310,500.
You may want to check out other guesthouses in the neighbourhood. On Jalan Kawi are:
1. Kawi Guest House at no 40, with attractive colonial atmosphere and adjacent resto; rates from Rp 175,000 to Rp 275,000.

Hotel Gajah Mada: One of Malang good hotel
when I arrived malang, it's already 11pm, after 5 hours from bontang to balikpapan, and 2hours waiting in the airport, 1,5 hours in plane, 2 hours journey to Malang... I really really need a bath and offcourse a good rest...and this hotel have a very confortable bed...zzzzzzzz.. I only spent one night here, and I satistied with this hotel. In the restaurant you can find Jamu (indonesian traditional drink), dont make a mistake 'cause it looks like fruit juice

helios hotel: an lovely hotel atmosphere in malang
helios hotel is just right in the heart of the city ,10 minutes from the town square .has cheap room and standart room with hot water. good travel information about public buses and point of interest in malang ,they have tourist information office .its also recommended in the lonley planet guide book .
