earthquakes

by Jiuliana

Hello there,

I am from Borneo and this July I am planning to go on a trip to Surabaya,
due to business matters. For about just couple of weeks.
However, I have heard a lot told me that Surabaya is very hazardous location
to go since earthquake might occur anytime. Is coming earthquake is predictable?
Or any travel agency will inform or warn the travelers about the weather as well as any upcoming catastrophes?

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

No earthquakes cannot be foretold and they can happen anywhere in the world. It is no more dangerous in any other country than it is in your own.

We live in California and I wish they could predict earthquakes but they can't. They do predict dangerous weather with some accuracy so keep an eye on the local news station for weather warnings.

Enjoy your trip.

Re: earthquakes

by DSwede

Earthquakes are common in the continental shelf south of Bali and Surabaya. However, none in recent history have caused any measurable damage.

I was in Surabaya for two earthquakes and in Bali for one earthquake. I only felt the first one slightly and had to read the newspaper to learn the second two.

I live in Surabaya. Never heard or felt any earthquakes before. Surabaya is safe. Maybe East Java is what you meant.

Travel Tips for Surabaya

Kota Indamardi

by ukirsari

Kota Indamardi is acronym from 'Kota Industri Dagang Maritim dan Pendidikan' (city of industry, trade, maritime and knowledge). And I do like to underlining the word 'Maritime'. Surabaya is the big city number two in Indonesia --after Jakarta the capital city. Also becomes the biggest harbour for east part of our archipelago and a homebase of Indonesian Navy called 'Armatim' (acronym from Armada wilayah Timur). Sailing Pass! My favorite event which held annual on Tanjung Perak Navy base. Because my Dad was a Navy, since I was a kid (about 4 years old), the whole of my family will present on the harbour to see my Dad giving salute from his battle ship which sailing over the harbour. Really, I will never forget these beautiful moments in my life.

shopping in Plasa Tunjungan/ Plasa SUrabaya/ Galaxy mall. you can try Pasar Atum too: it is the oldest shopping center in Surabaya. but you should bargain here, and they often give you the highest price as they can... :)
eating in Mie Gili or 3-6-9. Mie Gili offers Chinese cuisine. Also Fajar Restaurant in Plasa Tunjungan 1, 5th floor (chinese food). great varieties of meals are served here: asparagus soup, shark fin soup, angsio hie (flour-coated fried fish with sweet-sour sauce), chinese-style steak, char siu (roasted pork with sweet sauce), dumplings, noodle, fried rice, etc.
when I went shopping in Plasa Tunjungan and ate in Fajar Restaurant (May 1996).
