by isssb

Hi friends,

after arrivng at Surabaya Airport in the morining about 10am I would like to go to gunung bromo straight so that I can reach bromo before evening.
I need friends advice on the transport.
What if I take a mini van from airport straight to bromo. How much would it cost?

Or any other idea friends can give?

From airport direct to Bromo, it is better you rent a van. It cost about idr 500,000. Stay over night at Cemoro Lawang is recommended caused we can enjoy the beautiful view of Mt Bromo from this village in the evening time but facilities are standard here. Then early in the morning about 03.30 am hire a horse or wheel Jeep to Penanjakan or direct to Mt.Bromo to see the beautiful sunrise.

You can also contact your hotel in Bromo to arrange a pick up. Bromo Cottages in Tosari, for example, offers around Rp. 950.000,- for return trip from Airport to the hotel (including driver and gasoline).

Travel Tips for Surabaya

Surabaya as a monumental city

by ukirsari

Surabaya is a provincial capital of East Java and second-largest city in Indonesia. Situated on Java island, with the borderlines: Java Sea ((west) and Pasuruan (east), Mojokerto (south) and Madura island (north).
This city founded at 1293, when Raden Widjaya, the king of Majapahit established Majapahit kingdom --the last and the greatest Javanese empire. This city is designated for a trading port in the mouth of Brantas River (known also as Kali Mas or Mas River). Meanwhile, the name 'Surabaya' is taken from a legend about great battle between sura (shark) and buaya (crocodile) in the mouth of the river. Surabaya serves as a trading port over half a millenium, so we can find many interesting places which are related with maritime life, including the redolent of foreign traditions like Chinatowns and Kampung Arab (Middle East). And the other side, we can also find colonial buildings, as the commemorate of Dutch occupation and nation's independence struggle. So Surabaya also known as Kota Pahlawan or City of Heroes.

Bring your jacket to see Bromo

by ashafruddin

Travel light with t-shirts as Surabaya is hot all year round. Your jacket and two layers of t-shirt should survive the early morning cold breeze at Gunung Penanjakan. Once the sun is up a t-shirt will do. Bring along plenty of films or memory cards when you visit Mt Bromo.

You probably won't want to...

You probably won't want to stay in Surabaya very long. Go south, then east, toward Mt. Bromo, an active volcano. The locals say that people who climb Mt. Bromo will have good luck for the rest of their lives. It's true, for me! You should stay in one of the many hotels and guest houses on the way up the mountain, so that you don't have too far to go to reach the top the next day. Tour operators will take you as far as cars can go up Mt. Bromo very early in the morning. Then you climb in the darkness, reaching the top just before sunrise. After watching the sun rise, you can look down into the volcano's pit, see the red glow and smell the sulfurous fumes. Then climb back down to your transportation. It's not terribly strenuous. Any healthy person can do it.

24-hr coffee shop at ELMI hotel
I think this is the only 24-hr rest. in town. Very handy for late night meals after the bars in town shut at 2am. Food is cheap but drinks aren't, so drink the free water they give you. Sop Buntut (oxtail soup)

Warung Kepiting

by lupit about Warung Kepiting

well, this is not exactly a restaurant but merely a hawker stall. You gotta be a local to know this place, it's great! Kepiting Goreng Mentega (crab fried in butter) and Cumi Asam Manis (squid in sweet & sour sauce)- as seen in photo
