A Haven of Peace in the Midst of Surabaya
The Majapahit was built in 1910 by the Sarkie brothers who designed the famous Raffles Hotel in Singapore. We've come across lots of their hotels on our travels such as The Eastern and Oriental Hotel, Penang, the Strand, Yangon. We had never actually stayed in one until this trip and stayed in the Majapahit at a really good price. They offer lots of deals as Surabaya does not have too many tourists.
The hotel is just so tranquil and calming. Its rooms are built around courtyards filled with brightly coloured flowers and gurggling fountains. The staff are lovely and very friendly.
Outside the front door of the hotel is traffic congested chaos. inside is birdsong and trickling water.
The hotel has an interesting history. It was originally the Oranje Hotel. In 1945, as unrest was mounting and cries for independence were being heard all over Indonesia, someone made the error of raising the red, white and blue striped Dutch flag on the hotel's flag pole. The hotel was stormed , the flag was lowered and the bottom blue strip torn off turning it into a red and white Indonesian flag. Rioting ensued and the event helped earn Surabaya its nickname of City of Heroes. There is a small plaque in the hotel commemorating this event.
The hotel has beautiful old colonial style rooms, a Chinese restaurant, a lovely outdoor swimming pool and a spa.
Unique Quality: Staying in a Sarkies brothers hotel at a very reasonable price.
A colourful and interesting history.

Surabaya's Own Raffles Hotel
When I lived and worked in East Java 1997/98, every second weekend "country came to town" and my wife, two small children and I would stay the weekend in a Surabaya hotel. Our company had special corporate rates plus being resident, our rates were much better than if we had been tourists.
If we wanted a night on the town - dancing, Mexican food, cocktails etc, we would stay in the Shang-ri La. Sometimes we would stay in the Sheraton, Westin, Radisson or Hyatt Regency. But for special occasions, such as Christmas/New Year, Idul Fitri etc, we loved to stay longer at the Majapahit. It was a glorious place where you could feel the glamour of the 1920's/1930's round every corner. Modern and up to date where it mattered, but retaining that aura of style.
I would recommend it, if you like a quieter ambience, even yards from the busy streets, an oasis of stylish serenity.
Unique Quality: The rooms are very well and tastefully appointed with all the attention to detail geared to make your stay a relaxing, very pleasant one. I loved the beautiful swimming pool which never seemed to be crowded. I also loved the fact that though in the midest of the city, cheek by jowl with busy streets, the ambience in the garden is quiet and peaceful. They have an art-deco ballroom which, even when not being used, conjures up mind-images of silk evening gowns, formal tuxedos and Noel Coward and a priveleged age.
I love everything about this hotel - and the food's good too !

Hotel Majapahit
The Majapahit Hotel building was built in 1910 by the Sarkies brothers... It has been under the management of various groups in its colourful history... It was named Oranje Hotel (under Dutch colonialism), Yamato Hotel (during Japanese occupation), LSM Hotel (when under LM Sarkies), Majapahit Oriental Hotel (when managed by the Mandarin Oriental Group) and just just plain Majapihit Hotel (when the MO group leaves)...
Majapahit Hotel claims its place in the history of Indonesia when Surabaya youth (from Arek-arek Surabaya movement) scaled the hotel's squat tower and tore down the Dutch flag from the flagpole... This incident help to ignite the Indonesian freedom movement resulting in starting of the Battle of Surabaya on November 10, 1945...
The hotel has conference facilities... and F&B outlets include the Sarkies Seafood Restaurant, Indigo Restaurant, Lobby Lounge for drinks and Toko Deli for cakes and pastries... There is also a swimming pool and spa facilities...
Unique Quality: The hotel boasts of graceful architecture, landscaped garden and courtyards... It is one of the grand hotels that the Sarkies brothers left behind and is comparable to the The Raffles (of Singapore), The Strand (of Yangon), The E&O (of Penang) and The Oriental (of Bangkok)... The rooms (or suites) are elegently furnished and service is of a high standard...

Antique hotel in Surabaya
Unique settings and decorations. Foods not that excellent though.
Unique Quality: The hotel was built during dutch colonies era in Indonesia and only renovated in recent years. Once you stepped into the hotel, you get the feeling that you are blast to the past.

Hotel Yamato a.k.a Majapahit
An old hotel plus historic one. The Surabaya heroes ripped the Dutch flag in the top of this hotel and its becomes red and white. Indonesia's National flag!
Unique Quality: Old style building with traditional touch. Also has a bar called "Indigo" which served delicious Peking duck.

Staying at 5 star Hotel...
Staying at 5 star Hotel Majapahit - Mandarin Oriental is a must! It's one of the most beautiful hotels I've seen. I attached a picture of the garden taken on my wedding reception.
Indonesian citizens and expatriates are entitled for rupiah rate, which is very good value.
Unique Quality: Being one of (and the best)heritage buildings in Surabaya with lots of history, it's a colonial style building with spacious & luxurious room and beautiful garden. For best experience stay in of their 'garden terrace room', but you have to book it directly with hotel.Comes with 5 star facilities. Their chinese restaurant is good, sometimes they have all you can eat dim-sum which is good value & yummy. Their Indigo restaurant is alright, but their warm chocolate pudding is outstanding.

Re: Hotel Majapahit Surabaya
I haven't stayed at Majapahit hotel but I did stay at Novotel Surabaya last April. First of all, They gave me and my colleagues smoking rooms though when we booked a week before we requested non-smoking room. And the rooms smelt mushy.
Other things, the location of the hotel quite far from the downtown. The food at the restaurant was so so. This wasn't our first choice hotel but since Mercure hotel was fully booked we chose this hotel.
Re: Hotel Majapahit Surabaya
We stayed in the Majapahit last year and absolutely loved it. The area outside the hotel, like most of Surabaya is traffic-clogged and chaotic. yYu start to relax as soon as you pass through the door. Inside the hotel is quiet and peaceful. There are courtyards with trickling fountains and colourful flowers. Our room was lovely, cool, quiet, spotlessly clean. There is an outdoor swimming pool and a spa. There is a Chinese restaurant, another restaurant and a bar. The hotel was designed by the Sarkie brothers who designed the Raffles and is of the old colonial style. I've never stayed in the Novotel, but found the Majapahit to be the best thing about Surabaya. The staff were friendly and helpful, too.
Re: Hotel Majapahit Surabaya
Hi,
Absolutely stay at the Majapahit. Its like staying at the Raffles in Singapore without the ridiculous price tags. Even if you dont stay there, plan to have tea in the coffee house. Not a bad way to spend a hot afternoon.
We usually pay USD 70 for the poolside rooms.
