Hi all,
Just wanted to know what you would recommend as the best way to arrive in Surabaya from Yogyakarta, based on time, money and convenience (number of hours).
Upon arriving in Surabaya, what would be the best mode of transportation to get to the city center?
Is there a good hotel like IBIS which is around 400,000 Rp. per room (for 2 persons) per night in the city center? Would it be near a shopping mall as well?
What would you recommend to see in Surabaya?
I have read that Malang is worth the trip. Would you recommend staying in Malang for 1 night then going back to Surabaya since we need to fly to Denpasar after Surabaya.

i suggest you take train from yogya to surabaya. it will take abt 6hrs, by SANCAKA train, the train leaving from yogya at 7am and 3pm..so u have two options. u will arrive in Surabaya Gubeng station, which is located in central surabaya. there is Ibis hotel which located in Jembatan Merah, about 20min by taxi from train station. last rate i checked was 400.000 rupiahs include breakfast for 2 persons. ibis hotel is near to House Of Sampoerna museum, it is a museum which keep history about cigarette fabric,and they have a free shuttle bus service which will take u around some historic places in surabaya.

Hotel in Malang Kusuma Agrowisata Hotel or Royal Orchid Garden that is about USD 50/night.
i think you should better that you go by bus than by train from jogyakarta to surabaya because the bus schedule more timely than train.but if you lto see the interesting view during on the way i suggest you to chose train,if you want go to bali after traveling at surabaya i think you should better go Ijen Crater than Malang,because almost all the europe people have visit this place.you can spend the night at bondowoso and early morning you start the trip to Ijen Crater after that you can direct go to Bali,or if you start from surabaya in saturday morning you can stay overnight in my place,i will take you to see a traditional art music called Glundeng at Saturday night the week.have a nice trip in java.you contact me in my phone mobile +6285259141558

Sunrise at Mount Bromo (+/- 2.5 hrs from Surabaya by car) has the most spectacular view ever! Warning: the background of this pic is not a painting, it's truly taken from Mt. Penanjakan over looking to Mt. Bromo, Mt. Semeru, Mt. Batok!
If you're listen the way people in west and central Java talking, you can be shocked by the way Surabayanese speaking. Hard accent, full of intonation and sometimes heard very different comparing with another Janavese lingo. But don't worry, this 'hardness' also mirroring how nice they're :)
Like the way they say "Yak opo kabare 'Cak?" (How are you, my old man? in Surabayanese) it's similar with "Kados pundi kabar panjenengan?" (the same meaning but taken from central Java. The intonation is more soft and kindly). The smile always appears on my face, whenever I am talking with my good friends; Fihe and Bhuri. We feel we're Surabayanese, but my lingo close to central Java, comparing with them :)
I would say not to give kids who is begging money as I have seen small kids probably about 6 years old or so buying and smoking cigarettes with the money that they got from begging. If you do want to give them something I would say rather give them food as they can be really persistant.

Many domestic and international airlines fly to Surabaya.
From airport you can take a taxi to reach places around the city.
To go to the bus station "Bungurasih" where you can catch intercity buses, there is a bus line which you can easily find at the airport.
The train station is located around downtown area, so if you want to catch the train to go to other cities in Indonesia, you need to take a taxi from the airport to the train station or you have to go to the bus terminal "Bungurasih" and take a city bus from there.

No need to go to a big seafood resto. Only go to pedestrian, we can find several delicious items. Kepiting (crab) type 'kepiting batu' and 'kepiting soka'. Especially for kepiting soka, they have soft carapas and we can eat them also including their meat. My Mum has a simple recipe for this kepiting soka; fried them with egg yolk and pepper. Served hot with steamed rice and mango-chili sauce plus shrimp paste. Hmmmm ....
