temperature high up in Bromo

by milknoats

can somebody tell me the estimated temperature I can be experiencing in Bromo sunrise watching area?

Re: temperature high up in Bromo

by theo1006

You may expect temperatures as low as 5 to 10 degrees Celsius.
I once made the ride through the sand sea on horseback, and was terribly cold. Therefore I recommend to walk on ones own legs; by walking one keeps warm.

Hi,
Quite cold. Make sure you have thick warm socks and a jacket.

Hi Theo, Thank you for your reply. Riding through the sand sea on horseback sounds interesting. Does one need to know how to ride a horse to do that? Pardon me for asking somewhat sounds like a silly question for there are places where horseback riding is well guided for first-time rider. Is it safe to hike alone? I supposed it has to be an overnight hike in order to be on time for sunrise right?

Hi,

It is a long time ago that I did this (Bromo on horseback), but I am sure that it is easier now than then, because there are a lot more visitors.

The Bromo caldera looks like an enormous soup plate with Bromo volcano as a hump in the centre. The bottom is the sand sea, which is surrounded by a mountain ring as high as Bromo itself.

The time the ride takes, depends on where you stay over. At the time I was there (1970), there was no accommodation on top of the ring, one had to start out below. But I understand that now there is a hotel of some kind on the ring, so all one has to do is: go down from the ring into the sand sea, cross it to the center en then climb Bromo by a long flight of stairs. Should not take more than two hours as far as I remember, so as to be on time for sunrise one should start not later than say four o'clock. The people there will be able to advise you more exactly.

As for the horses, they are very tame, anyone can ride them - just have to sit on them. Likely there will be a lot of locals offering you to hire their horse. But as I said, if you want to do this, be sure to dress very warmly, because as you sit still on the horse your body does not generate much warmth by itself.
They nowadays also seem to offer the ride in a 4-wheel-drive. For lazy people only in my opinion, takes away a lot of the fun.

Have a good trip,
Theo

From BROMO's peak !!

by AliJoe

From BROMO's peak are stunning views of active Mount Semeru,Java's highest mountain. The extinct volcano Mount Batok sits behind BROMO. No matter how much you have heard about it,you won't be prepared for this etheral, unforgettable spectacle. For the SUNRISE,walk down the wall of big crater so as to arrive on BROMO's narrow rim by daybreak. You have to wake up 0300,don't forget a flashlight and just fall in behind the tourists.Stay behind the person with torch. What a facinating panorama,SUNRISE at mount BROMO. I believe an artist can describe by lengthy. At that time, slowly your mind fly to The Almighty Great Creator.

Rawon - the black soup

by blue_sky04

Indonesia is rich of great cuisine as well as interesting herbs and spices. Some of them may look strange for foreigners such as ox tail soup, black shrimp paste, etc.
One of those strange things which you may encouter is this black soup or known as "rawon" in Indonesian. This food is popular in Java island, especially. It's made of meat and cooked with some ingredients in which one of them produces the black color.

You can find this food in Indonesian restaurants or some food stalls. However, I never eat this at a resto because we have good rawon at home like the one in the picture:-)

GOLF paradise

by blue_sky04

Golfing is becoming more and more popular in Indonesia, including in Surabaya.
There are some golf courses in town, as well as two golf courses in Pandaan, a small town about an hour driving from Surabaya.

Taman Dayu Golf course in Pandaan was designed by the world golfer Jack Nicklaus.
The site areas is about 597-hectare.
The golf course has 18 holes; surrounded with a 2,000-unit residential project with a village center, and a small hotel.

The scenery is beautiful as you can see Mount Welirang from this area.

Train from Surabaya to other cities

by blue_sky04

There are 2 main train stations in Surabaya - PASAR TURI and GUBENG. From these two stations, you can get the trains to go to other cities such as Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Banyuwangi, as well as other small towns.

I will write the address of the train stations, list of trains, their schedules and destinations in the travelodge. You can check it out.
