Maryos Guesthouse: New in Ruteng

At Lucas Restaurant in Bajawa we saw an ad for this new guest house, and we sought it out on our return journey. It had been receiving guests for just half a year, and was not yet quite finished.

The only employee around was the assistant manager Felix. He said that the owner was the Bupati (Regent) of Manggarai Timur regency. The latter used a local workforce to have the guest house built, which perhaps explains the stairs with steps of unequal width and height. And why the name Maryos? It is an acronym for Maria and Yosef!

There are 12 guest rooms with private bathroom (western toilet and hot water). No AC, but you don't need it in Bajawa. We were the only guests and stayed at the first floor with ample common space and balconies. From this floor you can view nearby mountains.

Room price Rp 250,000 includes welcome drink and a simple breakfast (July 2011).
A drawback is the distance from town, but it is close to one of the tourist attractions, Combang Ruteng.

Directions: From Ruteng cathedral go west, then at the T-crossing left; this is Monginsidi street. Follow this road, which changes name into Anggrek street. At junctions, when in doubt, choose the widest road. At 2.3 km from the cathedral, just across a narrow bridge on your right are the pillars of Combang Ruteng (ancient village). Here turn left and after 600 m you reach Maryos Guesthouse. Call the assistant manager if you have difficulty getting there.
