Self Travel in Manado

by etech120

My wife and myself will be going to Manado in early June.
As a travel agency quoted us quite costly for 3 nights stay with half day sightseeing to Bunaken (we are not divers), 1 day to Minahasa and city tour as the package is only for two of us.
Can someone advise if we can move around on our own to those above mentioned places ? Or is there tourist group we can join so the cost is cheaper ?

I dont mean this the wrong way,and please dont take offense, but if you are not divers, why go to Manado?
My husband and I were there last summer (we're divers) and the hotel that we stayed at was reasonably priced, if terribly false advertised. We were there 8 days, including 3 meals per day and all our diving for $1200. (To give a little perspective, diving is typically about $50 per diver for every two dives. We were doing about 4 dives per day, each). The hotel had none of the amenities advertised and had lost funding to remodel several years before. Of course, this is not what was sold to us by our travel agent or their website. Anyhow, long story short, it wasnt what we were expecting, but it we were able to make due.

I think you wouldnt have much trouble moving about on your own, if you were able to rent a car or you could probably hire a driver for a reasonable price. I would try to get a tour of the countryside as well.

Hi,
For information on Sulawesi have a look at this website built for Daud by a traveller.
http://www.daudtoraja.com/
Daud is a lovely young man I met in Tana Toraja in Nov 2006. I did not use him as a guide because I had already made contact with the wonderful Dodo in Makasaar and he organised my guide Yatim for the funeral.
Maybe contact Daud and see what he suggests to go and see.
Wait a few days for a reply because he may be away on tour or in many cases the guides only go to the internet every few days not every day like we do.
Pamela.

Travel Tips for Manado

Weather and Climate in Manado

by blue79flower

Like other regions in Indonesia, North Sulawesi has a typical equatorial climate with two seasons: rainy and dry. Starting in September, cool Northwesterly winds pick up moisture while crossing the South China Sea and arrive in the Sulawesi Sea about November. The wet season lasts from about November to March, but it is usually less pronounced than in many other parts of Southeast Asia and thus not really a serious concern in North Sulawesi. Hence you can visit Manado year round! You are practically free to consider your own schedules, and perhaps avoid the holiday crowds.

Beware!Real Hot Dog!

by pangtidor

Most of Manado people eat dogs! When you will go to the parties, you should ask what the food on the table are before you eat it.Dogs, bats, even snakes will be served on the tables even the parties will be in a restaurant. Most of the food are hot and spicy.Putting back the food you have taken and smelling the food are disrespectul here.

Are you ready for the common public toilets here?

by pangtidor

Have you seen the picture?Yup.It is the common toilet in public places here.Take a look closely so you wont be shocked in Manado.Toilets and bathrooms for Indonesians should be wet.Sometimes you may even see some toilets with water flowing on the floor.Don`t expect to find the toilet paper. You sometimes have to pay to use the toilet in the malls!!Even the smell will be horrible sometimes. So just bring tissue with you everywhere and get ready for the wet and stinky toilet. The toilet is around 1000 Indonesian Rupiah in January 2007.Somebody will be sitting or standing near the door with the wooden box where you put your money in.You dont have to pay the toilet in the restaurant.

Emergency Numbers in Manado

by pangtidor

The Emergencies numbers in Manado are AMBULANCE – 118, POLICE – 110, FIRE DEPARTMENT- 113
SEARCH AND RESCUE - 115 or 811782. The local hospital number (General Hospital) is 853191, manado airport 814320, Ship information 860908, and the post office is 161. For local information or telephone numbers of a person/company, you may call 108.

THE INTERNET

by pangtidor

There are not many good internet cafés in Manado. DO NOT GO TO THE CYBER CAFÉ, BETWEEN THE POST OFFICE AND BANK BCA AT SAM RATULANGI STREET. You may be impressed by its stand from the front side but the connection is super slow. The good one from my experience will be ELF COMPUTER, at the intersection of Sarapung Street, Kartini Street, and 14 February Street. You may reach it from the road beside Bank BCA at Sam Ratulangi Street, near the furniture store at the end of that street. Others can be found at beside THE KLABAT UNIVERSITY, AIRMADIDI (quite far from city center) and at the MEGAMALL (top floor). The local name for the internet café is WARNET – Warung Internet. If you stay in the local house with the land line telephone, get the dial up connection. The id is telkomnet instant and the dial number is 08098999. The connection is slow, and you may expect the same to the GPRS service of the local cell phone numbers. The 3+ stars hotels will have the internet connection too.
