Hi Kenpoh, I don't know where are you from? If you arrive in the evening, I am strongly "not recommended" you to take a trip directly to Lake Toba in the night by the safety reason, so please stay a night at Medan in a Hotel which stranded along Sisingamangaraja street (all taxi drivers know the street), Medan downtown, the street was located around Medan Great Mosque (MASJID BESAR Medan in Indonesian language), there are many budgets and star hotels along the street or you could check Daksina Hotels, Garuda Hotels and many others, ask the airport information desk about the hotels along that street.
The next morning you could contact a travel agent at Sisingamangaraja street which could deliver you directly to Parapat (a town at the edge of Lake Toba), check my North Sumatra Province Transportation Tips.

Travel Tips for Medan

Unpolluted

by SLLiew

Yes, if you on a becak behind a car, you can smell the fumes.

But what a wonderful surprise when I was walking opposite the Post Office at Merdeka Square and looked into the drain surrounding the square right in downtown heart of Merdeka.

There were the usual clot of urban rubbish but the water in the drain was clear with green growth and teeming with fish - the ferral guppies. Reminded me of Penang many years ago.

This was an indication that pollution level in Medan is still low compared with many fast growing Asian cities. Hopefully, a healthy balance will be maintained as Medan inevitably will developed from a quiet laybaid city to a thriving metropolis in the future.

This is a very colourful way how they adverstise the going -on at the hotels, etc.
like food fair, food festivals, some performances etc

In Malaysia they have it in a fabric banner, or a solid large board with neon lights. Here it is really long and huge, and ultra colourful!!!

Use simple English

by SLLiew

If you have to use English, speak slowly and use textbook English phrases like...

"I want to go to Lake Toba for 2 nights" and not

"We are hoping to get out of town for a few nights, perhaps you can recommend us an itinerary which includes Lake Toba"

The name of this shop caught my attention. I have heard of bakery and eatery but "cakery" for the first time in Medan.

a lovely tourist town located in the Karo highlands. The town is known fomts plantations and various kinds of flowers vegetables and fruit most famous of which is the "Marquisa" passion frult.
Its 66 km southwest of Medan and is 4.594 feet above sea level. There is a pleasant colonial-style hote with a golf course. Other new hotels can also be found. From Gundaling Hill a clear view of Mt. Sibayak and Mt. Sinabung volcanoes can be seen.
