Novotel Soechi Medan
Although quite an ugly building from the outside, it is very large, spacious and pleasant inside, starting with the lobby. Service is excellent, maps of Medan are given free at reception. The lobby also has a souvenir shop and some excellent freshly ground coffee. The hotel is in the central part of town. Wifi internet access (quite slow) is available in rooms on the 8th floor and lobby only. There is an outdoor swimming pool on the 5th floor plus a small fitness room (mainly bikes and running machines).
The third and fourth floors have a very loud pub / with live bands or DJ (although other places in town are more popular). There are also at least 20 individual karaoke rooms. There are two restaurants (one of which is Chinese) and most of the menu is available on room service too. Quality of food is quite good.
Unique Quality: The main problem is that most rooms on the 8th and some on the 10th floor suffer from a constant throbbing low-frequency whirring / buzzing noise (probably a generator or air conditioning unit). It is so loud that you can feel the furniture vibrating and makes sleeping difficult if you are sensitive to noise. Rooms on the 8th floor in the 833-843 range are OK though, as they are on another wing of the building. Lower floors are probably OK but there may be noise from the pub which is open until 3am. Staff were very helpful when I requested a change of rooms.

Not the best but good location
It's not easy to find a good hotel in Medan and the costs tend to be expensive compared to the services you get.
Novotel is quite nice and clean with facilities follow the other Novotel's standard. There is a small swimming pool, gym, restaurant, etc. However, just like other hotels in Medan, the staff are not friendly neither helpful.
It's conveniently located in the city center, very easy to find places to eat as it is withing walking distance to Kesawan Square and just across the street from Jalan Semarang, both are the famous street food of Medan.
The hotel is located above a mall, therefore it's a bit noisy.

Not quite a Novotel
Need a business hotel in Medan. Novotel on Jl Cirebon is central and used to be the place. The place is 4 star, but is definitely getting run down. The threadmills in the Gym are in bad condition, of 3 machines 1 is out of order, 1 is flashing lights, and the one that works does not elevate and if it did it would raise your head to the ceiling if you are taller than 180 cm. The hotel is still called Novotel Soechi Medan, but right now (Jan 2004) I noticed that it cannot any more be found on the www.novotel.com or www.accor.com listings, perhaps it has been dropped/has dropped out? The Pub music vibrates throughout the hotel structure until 2 or 3 am. This could be a good place with a renovation. 375,000 Rp a night; will have to try Angkasa which is supposed to be around 500,000.
Unique Quality: Soechi has always had happy and positive staff with great efforts, and does so today. Central to Kota/Chinatown.

i think, the best n the new one is Novotel Soechi Medan, or the secound best is inna dharma deli.
in the town of medan, u could visit maimunah palace n kesawan square (night food cort), out the town, u could visit brastagi (hilly area) n lake toba
welcome 2 medan n have a graet visit......

I used to stay in Garuda Citra hotel for three days, the location is good for access to everywhere. their family/deluxe room is wide, air conditioned,TV,inside bath room, breakfast. Beer is provided in their caffee. Small annoying stuff mosquitoes frequently fly around the room. Suggestion: ask room boy to spray anti mosquito before sleeping. room rate is reasonable.
Hotel Dhaksina (one night stay), the room is well painted, nice color, bed is good. Design of bath room bit weird with their shower, suggestion get a room with bath tub,breakfast. mosquito might be also problem. Room rate is reasonable for star I hotel.
Hotel Semarak (10 days stay)completely satisfying, Inside bath room,swimming pool,breakfast,and other facilities for three stars hotel,bit problem is u need to take vehicle to access other places,such as Maimoon Palace and center.
Special discount is offered for long term stay (two weeks above).
Hotel Antares, new hotel in Medan, looks good but I had no chance to stay there, always fully book when I was there.
Novotel Soechi, comfortable hotel, must be considered if you are high budget traveller.
Agree with Happy in regard to tourism destination. Kesawan square is unique eating place. Enjoy
