How to get minivan or transport to Lake Toba, Parapat and Brastagi?

by liewsowkuen

Mid of January 2011 intend to go Medan(lake toba) with whole family (6 adults and 1 children) worry about transport charges and is there any Minivan transport services can take us around. Went to Bali last week, lots of transport services available and the charges is IRP320,000 from 8am to 7pm-reasonable price.

Hi,

Yes, you will find cheap prices in Bali because there are loads of tourists using the services.
In North Sumatra there are few tourists so prices will be so much higher.
I have a contact in Medan who would be able to quote a price for you.
His details are here

Travel Tips for Medan

BATAK CULTURAL CENTER

by and_juana

Lively and exciting dance and music performances are held here every Saturday night for a modest entrance fee; alternatively Prapat hotel has a similar cultural exhibition on their premises for tour groups.

The week-long Lake Toba Festival is held annually in June, where alongside the song and dance, is the fascinating canoe race held by competing villages. The lake and the mountain...

Prayers as your take off

by SLLiew

I was alerted while on board "Lion Air" that stashed in the pouch behind every seat with the standard plane safety and evacuation pamphlet is another pamphlet called "Invocation".

The invocation contains prayers of different religions, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism. It is all in Bahasa Indonesia.

Not sure if this is a good sign for boarding passengers but a prayer or two does not hurt...

never ever hand money with your left hand..

by missmarianne

itu salah..

means it is wrong.
for some reason, they would know that you are not an indonesian (other than the looks) if you are making some payment and you used your left hand for handing over the money.. tsk, tsk, tsk.. expect a strange look from whoever sees you doing it that way.

How to transport eggs & other goods

by globetrott

Mofas are the main means of transportation of the local merchants and smaller shops in Medan and other towns of Indonesia and this is why you will see many interesting vehicles like the motorbike that is delivering fresh eggs in quite an unusual and funny way at least in the eyes of the tourists.

Trying your kicking skills

by SLLiew

A group of middle persons standing in a circle and kicking a shuttle around.

The object is not to allow the shuttle to touch the ground but quickly kick it to another person in the group.

This is like a simpler version of "sepak raga" where a small shuttle is used instead of rattan ball. I have not seen this played in Malaysia but have seen it in Vietnam.

It caught my camera and my finger in the picture.
